Puli, Nantou
Puli Township () is an urban township in Nantou County, Taiwan. The township is located within the Puli Basin. It is the geographic center of Taiwan. Name In the 19th century the city was known as Posia () or Po-li-sia (). The Atayal name of the settlement was Sabaha Bakalas, meaning "house of stars". From 1920, during the Japanese era, the town was administered as , , Taichū Prefecture. History Spread of Christianity In 1870, a native of Po-li-sia named Khai-san received treatment for a medical issue in a missionary hospital in Taiwan-fu (present-day Tainan) and learned about Christianity. When he returned home, he spread information about Christianity to the people of the area. In July 1871, two native preachers were sent to the area after reports concerning the spread of Christianity in Po-li-sia were heard of in Taiwan-fu. Paper Dome
The Paper Dome () is a temporary church building constructed using paper tubes as structural elements. It was designed on a pro-bono basis by Shigeru Ban, a Japanese architect who is known for his paper tube structures and buildings. This temporary structure was built on September 17, 1995 to serve as a temporary church for Takatori Catholic Church after the Great Hanshin earthquake. The venue was not only limited for use to religious worship, but also used for communal gatherings. When the church community planned to build a permanent building, the structure was donated to Taomi Village in Puli Township, Nantou County, Taiwan, which had suffered the 921 earthquake in 1999. The deconstructed structure was shipped in 2006 to Taiwan, reconstructed there and is now a tourist attraction. National Highway 6 (Taiwan)
National freeway 6, also known as Shuishalian Freeway or Central East-West Freeway, is a freeway between Wufeng, Taichung and Puli, Nantou, and all of the main line was already open to traffic on 21 March 2009. The freeway runs parallel with provincial highway 14 for most of its length. Length The length is about 37.6 km between Wufeng, Taichung and Puli, Nantou. Muh Sheng Museum Of Entomology
The Muh Sheng Museum of Entomology () is a museum of entomology (especially butterflies, used for handicrafts) in Puli Township, Nantou County, Taiwan. Geographic Center Of Taiwan
Geographic center of Taiwan is the center point of Taiwan Island. It is located at ''Hutoushan'', "Tiger Head Mountain") in the township of Puli in Nantou County, Taiwan. History The first Geographic Center of Taiwan monument was constructed at the base of MountHutou in the 1970s. Following improved surveying, another monument was built later on, on the peak of the mountain. The peak monument was built on the former site of the Yoshitaka Shrine erected by the Japanese during their occupation of Taiwan. Architecture The monument is located on top of 400 stairs leading to it. The base monument features an inscription by former President Chiang Ching-kuo, written as ''Shan Qing Shui Xiu''. There are concentric steel rings on top of the monument pole, forming the basis of Puli Township logo. The peak monument was built in an aboriginal style, using columns with flare tops. Chung Tai Chan Monastery
Chung Tai Chan Monastery () is a Buddhist monastery located in Puli Township, Nantou County, Taiwan. It is the headquarters of Chung Tai Shan, an international Chan Buddhist order. It is the tallest and one of the largest monasteries in both Taiwan and the world, having a height of . Widely admired as an architectural masterpiece because of the mountain monastery's more modern look, the temple is second only to Fo Guang Shan's monastery in physical size and in the number of ordained disciples. Sun Moon Lake
Sun Moon Lake (; Thao: ''Zintun'') is a lake in Yuchi Township, Nantou County, Taiwan. It is the largest body of water in Taiwan. The area around the lake is home to the Thao tribe, one of aboriginal tribes of Taiwan. Sun Moon Lake surrounds a tiny island called Lalu. The east side of the lake resembles a sun while the west side resembles a moon, hence the name. Sun Moon Lake is located above sea level. It is deep and has a surface area of approximately .
