Puget Island, Washington
Puget Island is a 7.5 sq mi(4,785 acre; 19.365 km) island and Census-designated place (CDP) in the Columbia River in Wahkiakum County, Washington, United States. The Julia Butler Hansen Bridge (built in 1938) carries State Route 409 across the Cathlamet Channel to connect the island to the town of Cathlamet, Washington. Route 409 crosses the island to its southern shore, where it connects with the county-operated Wahkiakum County Ferry, ''Oscar B'', providing service to Westport, Oregon. The 2010 census reported a population of 831 persons. Puget Island's Robert W. Little Preserve is home to a population of endangered Columbian white-tailed deer. The Vancouver Expedition (1791–1795) was a four-and-a-half-year voyage of exploration and diplomacy, commanded by Captain George Vancouver of the Royal Navy. The British expedition circumnavigated the globe and made contact with five continents. Peter Puget
Peter Puget (1765 – 31 October 1822) was an officer in the Royal Navy, best known for his exploration of Puget Sound. Midshipman Puget Puget's ancestors had fled France for Britain during Louis XIV's persecution of the Huguenots. His father, John, was a successful merchant and banker, but died in 1767, leaving Puget's mother, Esther, with two sons and three daughters. The Columbian white-tailed deer (''Odocoileus virginianus leucurus'') is one of the several subspecies of white-tailed deer in North America. It is a member of the Deer, Cervidae (deer) family, which includes mule deer, elk, moose, caribou, and the black-tailed deer that live nearby. Habitat and description The Columbian white-tailed deer is named after the Columbia River in Oregon and Washington (U.S. state), Washington where it congregates.
