Puerto Rico At The 2008 Summer Olympics
Puerto Rico competed in the 2008 Summer Olympics which was held in Beijing, People's Republic of China from August 8 to August 24, 2008. The American territory with a population of four million people qualified 22 athletes in eight different sports. The appearance of the Puerto Rican delegation at the Beijing Olympics marked the commonwealth's sixteenth consecutive appearance at the Summer Olympics, and its twenty-second appearance at any Olympic Games, since its debut at the 1948 Summer Olympics in London, England. Of its competitors participating in events that involve progression by heats, six athletes advanced at least one round in their events, and two advanced at least two rounds, with Asunción Ocasio almost medaling bronze in taekwondo. Puerto Rico Olympic Committee
The Puerto Rico Olympic Committee (COPUR, es, Comité OlÃmpico de Puerto Rico) is the National Olympic Committee for Puerto Rico. It oversees Olympic-sports in Puerto Rico, and selects the Olympic team which represents the island. It was founded by Julio Enrique Monagas, and was officially recognized in 1948. COPUR operates the ''Casa OlÃmpica'', its headquarters in Old San Juan. Teams representing Puerto Rico have participated in every Summer Olympics since 1948. They have also participated at the 1984–2002 and 2018 Winter Olympics. In 2012, Sara Rosario became the first woman to serve as President of the COPUR. Félix Adolfo MartÃnez Cuevas (born February 4, 1985) is a Puerto Rican sprinter, who specialized in the 400 metres. He set both a national record and a personal best time of 45.92 seconds by finishing third for the 400 metres at the 2007 Ponce Grand Prix (NACAC Permit) in Ponce. MartÃnez represented his nation Puerto Rico at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, where he competed for the men's 400 metres. Ronald Joseph Forbes (born 5 April 1985) is a track athlete from the Cayman Islands. Forbes is an All American 110 meter hurdler and 60 meter hurdler who competed collegiality for Florida International University from 2005-2008 . Forbes went on to pursue a professional track and field career competing in the 2008, 2012, and 2016 Summer Olympics. Forbes has competed in the 2011 and 2015 Athletics World Championships. Indoors, Forbes has qualified and competed 2010 and 2012 World Indoor Athletics Championships. Forbes has competed in the 2006, 2010, 2014, and 2018 Commonwealth Games. Dudley Dorival (born 1 September 1975) is a retired Haitian hurdler. He was born in Elizabeth, United States. Dorival graduated from Ewing High School in 1993 and attended and competed at the University of Connecticut. He is best known for his bronze medal in 110 metres hurdles at the 2001 World Championships, which he won in a personal best time of 13.25 seconds. Fajardo, Puerto Rico
Fajardo (, ) is a town and municipality -Fajardo Combined Statistical Area. Fajardo is the hub of much of the recreational boating in Puerto Rico and a popular launching port to Culebra, Vieques, and the U.S. and British Virgin Islands. It is also home to the largest marina in the Caribbean, called Puerto del Rey. The town contains various hotels and inns. Offshore, near Fajardo, a few islets can be found. Héctor Cotto González (born August 8, 1984) is a Puerto Rican Olympic athlete specializing in the 110 meters hurdles. Background Cotto was born in Fajardo, Puerto Rico. His family moved to Irondequoit, New York, where he attended East Ridge Senior High School. When his family moved to Cary, North Carolina, he attended Green Hope High School and graduated in 2002. At Green Hope High, Cotto played football, ran track and field, and earned several all-conference honors for track. His personal best for the 110 and 55 meter hurdles ranked him at 11th in the nation in 2002. As of 2015, Cotto still holds several Green Hope High School records in track. David Freeman (born 28 April 1982) is a Puerto Rican middle distance runner. He was born in Miami,Florida USA and attended Hialeah High School in Hialeah, Florida. David started running Track & Field as a sophomore in high school. David was third in state championship in 800 meters as sophomore, second during his junior year and he won the state championship in the 800 meters during his senior year of high school (2000). While considered one of the top middle distance Track & Field runners in the state of Florida, David left Florida and earned an athletic scholarship to the University of Kentucky for Track & Field in 2000.
