Puerto Rico Office For Socioeconomic And Community Development
The Puerto Rico Office for Socioeconomic and Community Development ( es, Oficina para el Desarrollo Socioeconómico y Comunitario de Puerto Rico (ODSEC)) is a government agency of Puerto Rico that manages projects to improve and develop "Special Communities of Puerto Rico", ( es, Comunidades Especiales de Puerto Rico). The agency works with other government agencies, as well as with community members, to improve the infrastructure and economic opportunities of marginalized communities. Its original founding was in 2001 with Law 1-2001 passed by Governor Sila María Calderón. The new entity, employing some of the same people it had under a preceding office, is now responsible for "administering disaster funding". Sila María Calderón
Sila María Calderón Serra (born September 23, 1942) is a Puerto Rican politician, businesswoman, and philanthropist who was the governor of Puerto Rico from 2001 to 2005. She is the first woman elected to that office. Prior to her term as governor, Calderón held various positions in the government of Puerto Rico, including the 12th Secretary of State of Puerto Rico from 1988 to 1989, and Chief of Staff to Governor Rafael Hernández Colón. She was also mayor of San Juan, the capital of Puerto Rico, from 1997 to 2001. In Puerto Rico, there are 78 municipalities and 902 municipio subdivisions made up of 827 barrios and 75 barrios-pueblo. There are also a number of subbarrios and communities. The following is a list of the 902 barrios, some of the subbarrios, including the 40 subbarrios of Santurce, which is a barrio of San Juan and a few communities (, on the U.S. Census) arranged in alphabetical order. History Early history In 1682, William Penn founded Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, planning it as a city to serve as a port on the Delaware River and as a place for government. Humacao () is a city and municipality in Puerto Rico located in the eastern coast of the island, north of Yabucoa; south of Naguabo; east of Las Piedras; and west of Vieques Passage. Hormigueros (, ) is a town and municipality of Puerto Rico located in the western region of the island, northeast of Cabo Rojo; northwest of San Germán; and south of Mayagüez.
