Pueblos Pintorescos (Guatemala)
The ''Programa Pueblos Pintorescos'' ("Picturesque Towns Program") is an initiative led by Guatemala's ''Instituto Guatemalteco de Turismo'', known as INGUAT. The program seeks to promote sustainable tourism development in a network of towns and cities that have been identified for their historical, cultural, and natural attributes. Upon the program's establishment in August of 2019, a total of 9 cities and towns were identified by INGUAT as having the "relevant characteristics and initiatives" to be designated as ''Pueblos Pintorescos''. This initial cohort of 9 communities is distributed among 7 of Guatemala's 22 departments. ''La Red Turística de Pueblos Patrimonio'' ("The Tourism Network of Heritage Towns") is an initiative led by Colombia's Ministry of Commerce, Industry, and Tourism, with the assistance of the Ministry of Culture. It is administered by the National Tourism Foundation (FONTUR). The program seeks to promote tourism in a network of small and mid-sized towns that represent aspects of Colombia's cultural heritage, and to encourage sustainable economic development in these communities. The ''Programa Pueblos Mágicos'' (Spanish: weβloˈmaxiko(listen); "Magical Towns Programme") is an initiative led by Ecuador's Ministry of Tourism (MINTUR). The program seeks to promote tourism in a network of small and mid-sized towns that represent aspects of Ecuador's cultural heritage, and to encourage sustainable economic development in these communities. The Programa Pueblos Mágicos (; "Magical Towns Programme") is an initiative led by Mexico's Secretariat of Tourism, with support from other federal agencies, to promote a series of towns around the country that offer visitors special experiences because of their natural beauty, cultural richness, traditions, folklore, historical relevance, cuisine, art crafts, and great hospitality. It is intended to increase tourism to more localities, especially smaller towns in rural areas. Zacapa Department
Zacapa () is one of the 22 departments of Guatemala. It lies in eastern Guatemala with its capital in the city of Zacapa, approximately 112 kilometers (70 miles) from Guatemala City. Geography To the north lie the departments of Alta Verapaz and Izabal; to the east is the border with the Republic of Honduras; on the south are Chiquimula and Jalapa and to the west is El Progreso. The northern half of the department is mountainous, crossed from west to east by the Sierra de las Minas. The southern part of the department has small chains of mountains and isolated hills that are separated by fairly deep ravines. The central part of the department is formed by the riverbed and surroundings of the Motagua River. Totonicapán Department
Totonicapán is one of the 22 departments of Guatemala. The capital is the city of Totonicapán. History Historical chronicler Francisco Antonio de Fuentes y Guzmán, described the municipalities of Totonicapán in his 1689 “Recordación Florida.” This record confirms the area's pre-Columbian origins. In July, 1820, the indigenous residents of Totonicapán revolted against the government in response to excessive tributes imposed by the Spanish King Ferdinand VII. The Totonicapán Uprising of 1820 was led by Atanasio Tzul and Lucas Aguilar. After toppling the local government, Tzul declared himself king of the breakaway province, with Aguilar as president.
