The Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC; french: Agence de la santé publique du Canada, ASPC) is an agency of the Government of Canada that is responsible for public health, emergency preparedness and response, and infectious and chronic disease control and prevention. History The PHAC was formed because of a series of official inquiries about the SARS crisis in Canada which was particularly severe. For example, the province of Ontario inquiry and the National Advisory Committee on SARS and Public Health both recommended that a new organisation be formed. Archie Campbell (judge)
Archie Gray Campbell (13 April 1942 – 17 April 2007) was a former Justice of the Superior Court of Ontario and the lower Ontario Court. Biography Born in Montreal, Quebec, Campbell graduated from Osgoode Hall Law School in 1967. He worked at the Attorney General of Ontario's office as appeal counsel for the attorney general and as deputy attorney general. He later was senior policy advisor to the current Chief Justice of the Superior Court of Ontario Roy McMurtry. Outside of the AG office, Campbell worked briefly at the Parkdale, Toronto, Parkdale Legal Clinic in 1977 and taught at Osgoode Hall. He was appointed to the bench in 1986. Campbell's notable contributions included a 1995 inquiry into the police investigation of Paul Bernardo's crimes and the 2003 SARS Commission inquiry. 2009 Swine Flu Pandemic
The 2009 swine flu pandemic, caused by the H1N1 influenza virus and declared by the World Health Organization (WHO) from June 2009 to August 2010, is the third recent flu pandemic involving the H1N1 virus (the first being the 1918–1920 Spanish flu pandemic and the second being the 1977 Russian flu). The first two cases were discovered independently in the United States in April 2009. The virus appeared to be a new strain of H1N1 that resulted from a previous triple reassortment of bird, swine, and human flu viruses which further combined with a Eurasian pig flu virus, leading to the term "swine flu". Some studies estimated that the real number of cases including asymptomatic and mild cases could be 700 million to 1.4 billion people—or 11 to 21 percent of the global population of 6.8 billion at the time. David Butler-Jones
David Butler-Jones is a Canadian physician and public servant who served as the 1st chief public health officer of Canada from the position's formation on October 23, 2004 to June 2013. The chief public health officer was the head of the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) until the 2014 omnibus budget bill, in which the 28th Canadian Ministry of Stephen Harper decided to reorganize the management structure of PHAC and institute a parallel Presidential structure to govern the organization that then could be staffed by non-medical and non-scientific personnel. Nepean ( ) is a former municipality and now geographic area of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Located west of Ottawa's inner core, it was an independent city until amalgamated with the Regional Municipality of Ottawa–Carleton in 2001 to become the new city of Ottawa. Gandalf Technologies, or simply Gandalf, was a Canadian data communications company based in Ottawa. It was best known for modems and terminal adapters that allowed computer terminals to connect to host computers through a single interface. Gandalf also pioneered a radio-based mobile data terminal that was popular for many years in taxi dispatch systems.
