Pseudoterminal
In some operating systems, including Unix and Linux, a pseudoterminal, pseudotty, or PTY is a pair of pseudo-device endpoints (files) which establish asynchronous, bidirectional communication ( IPC) channel (with two ports) between two or more processes. The ''master'' provides means by which a terminal emulator process controls the slave. The ''slave'', emulates a hardware text terminal device. PTY are similar to bidirectional pipes. The ''master'' files are typically used by networking applications (e.g. rlogin) and ''slave'' files are used by terminal-oriented programs such as shells (e.g. bash) as a processes to read/write data back from/to ''master'' endpoint. Common application of PTYs is in providing network login services. Devpts is a Linux Kernel virtual file system used to emulate PTYs connection. Devpts
devpts is a virtual filesystem directory available in the Linux kernel since version 2.1.93 (April 1998). It is normally mounted at /dev/pts and contains solely devices files which represent ''slaves'' to the multiplexing ''master'' located at /dev/ptmx which in turn is used to implement terminal emulators (such as X11 xterm). Tty (Unix)
In computing, tty is a command in Unix and Unix-like operating systems to print the file name of the terminal connected to standard input. tty stands for TeleTYpewriter. Usage The tty command is commonly used to check if the output medium is a terminal. The command prints the file name of the terminal connected to standard input. If no file is detected (in case, it's being run as part of a script or the command is being piped) "not a tty" is printed to stdout and the command exits with an exit status of 1. The command also can be run in silent mode (tty -s) where no output is produced, and the command exits with an appropriate exit status. Windows Console
Windows Console is the infrastructure for console applications in Microsoft Windows. An instance of a Windows Console has a screen buffer and an input buffer. It allows console apps to run inside a window or in hardware text mode (so as to occupy the entire screen). The user can switch between the two using the key combination. The text mode is unavailable in Windows Vista and later. Starting with Windows 10, however, a native full-screen mode is available. TENEX (operating System)
TENEX is an operating system developed in 1969 by BBN for the PDP-10, which later formed the basis for Digital Equipment Corporation's TOPS-20 operating system. Background In the 1960s, BBN was involved in a number of LISP-based artificial intelligence projects for DARPA, many of which had very large (for the era) memory requirements. One solution to this problem was to add ''paging'' software to the LISP language, allowing it to write out unused portions of memory to disk for later recall if needed. The PDP-11 is a series of 16-bit minicomputers sold by Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) from 1970 into the 1990s, one of a set of products in the Programmed Data Processor (PDP) series. In total, around 600,000 PDP-11s of all models were sold, making it one of DEC's most successful product lines. The PDP-11 is considered by some experts to be the most popular minicomputer. RSTS () is a multi-user time-sharing operating system developed by Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC, now part of Hewlett-Packard) for the PDP-11 series of 16-bit minicomputers. Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC)'s PDP-10, later marketed as the DECsystem-10, is a mainframe computer family manufactured beginning in 1966 and discontinued in 1983. 1970s models and beyond were marketed under the DECsystem-10 name, especially as the TOPS-10 operating system became widely used.
