Prudence In Woman
''Prudence in Woman'' ( es, La prudencia en la mujer) is a play written by the Spanish playwright Tirso de Molina. It was written around 1621 and 1623, and was published in the third part of Tirso’s works (Madrid, 1634). ''Prudence in Woman'' is a history play that foregrounds the role of María de Molina, the widow of King Sancho IV of Spain, as she became regent during her son’s childhood, and had to face innumerable problems to retain power. In this play Tirso’ re-works another one of his historical dramas, ''La república al revés'' where Irene is regent of the Byzantine Empire. ''Prudence in Woman'' then highlights the role of the mother, which is a figure that is often absent in early modern Spanish plays. Her actions show her to be a chaste widow, a prudent woman (at a time when women were often described as fickle and impetuous), and a wise ruler. Tirso De Molina
Gabriel Téllez ( 24 March 1583 20 February 1648), better known as Tirso de Molina, was a Spanish Baroque dramatist, poet and Roman Catholic monk. He is primarily known for writing ''The Trickster of Seville and the Stone Guest'', the play from which the popular character of Don Juan originates. His work is also of particular significance due to the abundance of female protagonists, as well as the exploration of sexual issues. Life and career He was born in Madrid. He studied at Alcalá de Henares, joined the mendicant Order of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mercy on 4 November 1600, and entered the Monastery of San Antolín at Guadalajara, Spain on 21 January 1601. María De Molina
María Alfonso Téllez de Meneses (c. 1265 – 1321), known as María de Molina, was queen consort of Castile and León from 1284 to 1295 by marriage to Sancho IV of Castile, and served as regent for her minor son Ferdinand IV (1295 - c.1301) and later her grandson Alfonso XI of Castile (1312-1321). Queenship María was the daughter of the ''infante'' Alfonso of Molina and Mayor Alfonso de Meneses. Her paternal grandparents were King Alfonso IX of León and Queen Berengaria of Castile. Sancho IV Of Castile
Sancho IV of Castile (12 May 1258 – 25 April 1295) called the Brave (''el Bravo''), was the king of Castile, León and Galicia from 1284 to his death. Following his brother Ferdinand's death, he gained the support of nobles that declared him king instead of Ferdinand's son Alfonso. Faced with revolts throughout his reign, before he died he made his wife regent for his son Ferdinand IV. Biography Sancho was the second son of Alfonso X and Yolanda, daughter of James I of Aragon. Ferdinand IV of Castile (6 December 1285 – 7 September 1312) called the Summoned (''el Emplazado''), was King of Castile and León from 1295 until his death.
