The Hughenden-Winton railway line was a railway line in Queensland, Australia, branching from the Mt Isa line at Hughenden and connecting to the Central West line at Winton. It was originally part of the Great Northern Railway (Mt Isa line), but was later downgraded to branch line status when the extension west of Hughenden opened. Its vast interior was largely opened up by the construction of three east-west railway lines that connected the interior of the State to the eastern coastal towns of Brisbane, Rockhampton and Townsville. Corfield is a town and locality in the Shire of Winton in north-western Queensland, Australia. In the , Corfield had a population of 183 people. Geography The town is on the Kennedy Developmental Road—the road linking Winton and Hughenden— north west of the state capital Brisbane and south west of the regional centre of Townsville. The Landsborough Highway also passes through the locality (but not through the town) merging with the Kennedy Developmental Road just before crossing into Winton. The Central Western railway line passes through the south of the locality to its terminus at Winton railway station. The Richmond–Winton Road follows a section of the north-western boundary. The principal land use is cattle grazing. As the boundaries of Winton hug the grid layout of its streets, a number of Winton's facilities are actually located in Corfield. The Shire of Winton is a local government area in Central West Queensland, Australia. It covers an area of , and has existed as a local government entity since 1887. Its administrative centre is located in the town of Winton. It is named after Winton, Dorset, England, the birthplace of Robert Allen, the first white settler in the Winton (Queensland) area. The major industry in the shire is beef production and some opal mining. There has been some development of the known oil and gas reserves in the region. History The Winton Division was created on 23 September 1886 under the ''Divisional Boards Act 1879''. Kennedy Developmental Road
The Kennedy Highway is a highway in northern Queensland, Australia. It runs as National Route 1 for approximately 243 km from Smithfield, on the northern outskirts of Cairns, to the Gulf Developmental Road in the vicinity of Forty Mile Scrub and Undara Volcanic national parks (at Minnamoolka, about 40 kilometres south of Mount Garnet). South of this junction, the road continues as the Kennedy Developmental Road (State Highway 62) to Boulia about 936 kilometres away, via Hughenden. West of the junction, National Route 1 continues as the Gulf Developmental Road to Normanton. Route description From Smithfield, the highway climbs up into the Atherton Tableland before heading in a general south-westerly direction to the aforementioned junction.
