Provo IceCats
The BYU Cougars men's ice hockey team represents Brigham Young University (BYU) in the Mountain West Collegiate Hockey League within Division 2 of the American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA). The BYU Cougars Hockey Team began in 1996 as the Provo IceCats, and ice hockey had been a part of Brigham Young University for many years prior, but at the beginning of the 2007–08 season, the Provo IceCats – a club team composed of Brigham Young students which had been around since at least 1970 – finally gained recognition as an official extramural sport at BYU. Upon being officially recognized, the Cougars hockey team began representing their school by wearing the BYU logo on their uniforms and in their advertising. Although the team is officially recognized and sponsored by the university, it is funded entirely through player fees, the contributions of private donors, ticket proceeds, and various forms of advertising. Brigham Young University (BYU, sometimes referred to colloquially as The Y) is a private research university in Provo, Utah. Peaks Ice Arena is an indoor ice hockey and figure skating arena in Provo, Utah, located south of Salt Lake City. Along with the Maverik Center (originally known as the E Center) in West Valley City, it was built as an ice hockey and figure skating practice venue for the 2002 Winter Olympics. The Mountain West Collegiate Hockey League (MWCHL) is a collegiate hockey conference within Division 2 of the American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA). It is made up of seven universities throughout the Western United States. Three members are from the state of Utah, three from Montana and one from Idaho. American Collegiate Hockey Association
The American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) is a college ice hockey association. The ACHA's purpose is to be an organization of collegiate affiliated non-varsity programs, which provides structure, regulates operations, and promotes quality in collegiate ice hockey. The ACHA currently has three men's and two women's divisions and includes approximately 450 teams from across the United States. Teams offer few athletic scholarships and typically receive far less university funding. The BYU Cougars are the intercollegiate athletic teams that represent Brigham Young University (BYU), located in Provo, Utah. BYU fields 21 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) varsity athletic teams. They are a member of the West Coast Conference for most sports. Other sports compete in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation and as independents.
