''Proud'' is a comedy drama by John Stanley that explores issues surrounding gay pride and identity. It depicts a love story between Tom, a survivor of the Admiral Duncan bombing in 1999, and his 18-year-old boyfriend Lewis, a 2012 Olympic boxing hopeful, exploring their different attitudes toward being "Out and Proud". The play premiered at New Wimbledon Studio on April 8, 2009. Plot synopsis Rachel McCain, the proud mother of 18-year-old boxer Lewis, organizes a birthday dinner in his honor, inviting a small but select group to celebrate the occasion. Amongst the guests are Lewis's much older boyfriend Tom, a survivor of the 1999 Admiral Duncan bombing and Mac, Lewis's homophobic boxing trainer. Unbeknownst to Rachel, Lewis has been hiding his sexual identity from Mac and consequently an evening of comical subterfuge and meaningful soul searching unfolds. John Stanley (playwright)
John Stanley (born 1966) is a British playwright and screenwriter. He is best known as the writer of ''Proud'', a play written to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Admiral Duncan bombing in Soho, London, and as the screenwriter of the British thriller/horror feature film ''The Last Seven''. Background and Career Stanley was born in Edmonton, North London in 1966. In 2000 Stanley became a script writer and storyline consultant on the channel 5 continuing drama ''Family Affairs''. He remained a regular writer for the show until 2005. In 2009, he wrote the stage play ''Proud'', a gay-themed play marking the 10th anniversary of the bombing of the Admiral Duncan bar in Soho, London. Proud was updated by Stanley and revived by The LOST Theatre, London in 2012 to coincide with the 2012 Olympic Games. Admiral Duncan Pub
The Admiral Duncan is a public house in Old Compton Street, Soho in central London that is well known as one of Soho's oldest gay pubs. In 1999, the pub was bombed by neo-Nazi David Copeland, resulting in three people being killed and 83 being injured. Etymology The pub is named after Admiral Adam Duncan, who defeated the Dutch fleet at the Battle of Camperdown in 1797. History Early years The Admiral Duncan has been trading since at least 1832. In June of that year, Dennis Collins, a wooden-legged Irish ex-sailor living at the pub, was charged with high treason for throwing stones at King William IV at Ascot Racecourse. Collins was convicted and sentenced to be hanged, drawn and quartered, as the medieval punishment for high treason was then still in effect. New Wimbledon Theatre
The New Wimbledon Theatre is situated on the Broadway, Wimbledon, London, in the London Borough of Merton. It is a Listed building, Grade II listed Edwardian era, Edwardian theatre built by the theatre lover and entrepreneur, J. B. Mulholland. Built on the site of a large house with spacious grounds, the theatre was designed by Cecil Massey, Cecil Aubrey Massey and Roy Young (possibly following a 1908 design by Frank H. Jones). It seems to have been the only British theatre to have included a Victorian-style Turkish bath in the basement. The theatre opened on 26 December 1910 with the pantomime ''Jack and Jill''. Shana Frances Swash (born 28 July 1990) is an English actress, and the sister of actor and television presenter Joe Swash. Parry Glasspool (born 5 March 1992) is a British actor.
