Protective Hairstyle
A protective hairstyle (a term generally used with reference to Afro-textured hair) is a hairstyle that keeps the hair tucked away with minimum manipulation from the weather. Both cold and hot weather can pose as a threat to healthy hair with frigid air, humidity and water damage from rain and snow. Protective styles can help to retain length and growth. They include braids, wigs, locks, and twists. Afro-textured hair is often prone to breakage or damage from the elements; protective hairstyles aim to guard against this. However protective hairstyles sometimes involve tension at the scalp, like braids with weaves and wigs, and are not the ideal style. They may also prevent hair from growing, which, if prolonged, may lead to traction alopecia. Protective styles require styling hair for a few days and using the correct styles and products. Underground Railroad
The Underground Railroad was a network of clandestine routes and safe houses established in the United States during the early- to mid-19th century. It was used by enslaved African Americans primarily to escape into free states and Canada. The network was assisted by abolitionists and others sympathetic to the cause of the escapees. The enslaved persons who risked escape and those who aided them are also collectively referred to as the "Underground Railroad". Various other routes led to Mexico, where slavery had been abolished, and to islands in the Caribbean that were not part of the slave trade. Traction Alopecia
Traction alopecia is a type of alopecia or hair loss caused by a chronic pulling force being applied to the hair. It commonly results from a person frequently wearing their hair in a particularly tight ponytail, pigtails, or braids with increased odds when hair is chemically relaxed as this compromises the hair shaft's tensile strengt resulting in hair breakage. Traction alopecia causes a recession of the hairline due to chronic traction, which is characterized by a fringe along the marginal hairline on physical exam.
