Adolph Proskauer
Adolph Proskauer (1838 – 1900) was a Jewish officer in the army of the Confederate States of America during the United States Civil War. He rose to the rank of major. Major Adolph Proskauer of Mobile, Alabama was wounded several times. A subordinate officer wrote "I can see him now as he nobly carried himself at Gettysburg, standing coolly and calmly with a cigar in his mouth at the head of the 12th Alabama amid a perfect rain of bullets, shot and shell. He was the personification of intrepid gallantry and imperturbable courage. His nephew was Joseph M. Bernhard Proskauer
Bernhard Proskauer (8 January 1851, Ratibor – 24 July 1915, Berlin) was a German chemist and hygienist. He studied chemistry at the University of Berlin, and from 1874 worked as a chemist at the Imperial Health Office in Berlin. In 1885 he was named departmental head of the Institute of Hygiene at the university, attaining the title of professor in 1890. From 1891 he was associated with the Institute of Infectious Diseases, wherein 1901 he was named head of the department of chemistry. Johannes Max Proskauer
Johannes Max Proskauer (December 5, 1923 – December 20, 1970) was born in Göttingen, Germany. He travelled to England via a ''Kindertransport.'' His mother died in 1943 and his father was murdered in Auschwitz. He attended the University of London, which awarded him a B.Sc. in 1944, a Ph.D. in 1947, and a D.Sc. in 1964, all in the field of botany. In 1948, Proskauer moved to Berkeley, California, where he became an instructor in botany at the University of California, Berkeley. He was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1954. He became a United States citizen in 1957. Professor Proskauer's thesis research was concerned with the biology and morphology of the British species of the hornwort ''Anthoceros''. Much of his life's work focussed on this group, and in 1951, he recognized and defined the genus '' Phaeoceros'' for the first time. Julien J. Proskauer (June 14, 1893 – December 18, 1958) was an American magician and author. Proskauer was born June 14, 1893, to Joseph Proskauer and Bertha Richman Proskauer in New York City.
