Propaganda (The Sound Album)
''Propaganda'' is an album by English post-punk band the Sound. It was recorded in 1979, before they recorded their debut album ''Jeopardy'', and comprises the earliest material that they recorded. It was not released until April 1999 by record label Renascent, more than 10 years after the band broke up. It was viewed by the band as their true first album. Re-recorded versions of three of the tracks appeared on ''Jeopardy'': "Missiles", "Night Versus Day" and "Words Fail Me". In 2015 the album was reissued as part of a five-disc box set that also included the albums ''Shock of Daylight'', ''Heads and Hearts'', ''In The Hothouse (Live)'' and ''Thunder Up''. The Sound (band)
The Sound were an English post-punk band, formed in South London in 1979 and dissolved in 1988. They were fronted by Adrian Borland, and evolved from his previous band, the Outsiders. While never commercially successful, the Sound have long been championed by critics. Background Beginnings The Sound were formed in South London in 1979 from the remnants of the punk band the Outsiders. The original lineup of the Sound consisted of Adrian Borland (vocals, guitar) and Graham Bailey (bass guitar), both ex-Outsiders, along with Mike Dudley (drums) and woodwinds player Bi Marshall (born Benita Biltoo). While not a member, ex-Outsider Adrian Janes would contribute ideas and co-write lyrics to the Sound's music. Borland and Bailey also made up the band Second Layer, formed around the same time as the Sound. Post-punk (originally called new musick) is a broad genre of punk music that emerged in the late 1970s as musicians departed from punk's traditional elements and raw simplicity, instead adopting a variety of avant-garde sensibilities and non-rock influences. Inspired by punk's energy and DIY ethic but determined to break from rock cliches, artists experimented with styles like funk, electronic music, jazz, and dance music; the production techniques of dub and disco; and ideas from art and politics, including critical theory, modernist art, cinema and literature. Thunder Up
''Thunder Up'' is the fifth and final studio album by English post-punk band the Sound, released in 1987 on Belgian record label Play It Again Sam. Two singles were released from the album: "Hand of Love" and "Iron Years". The album and its subsequent tour precipitated the band's breakup in early 1988. Like the Sound's previous records, the album was not commercially successful, but the band largely considered it to be their best work. The BBC Recordings (The Sound Album)
''The BBC Recordings'' is a live album by English post-punk band the Sound, consisting of two sessions and two live recordings from 1980 to 1985 done for BBC radio. It was released in 2004 by Renascent. Background The first disc of ''The BBC Recordings'' consists of two recorded sessions, the first for Mike Read, which was originally broadcast between 6 and 9 October 1980, and the second for John Peel, broadcast on 16 November 1981. The second disc consists of concert recordings, the first broadcast on 21 November 1981 and the second broadcast on 15 June 1985. Reception ''The BBC Recordings'' received a positive response from critics. Peter Parrish of Stylus wrote: "Capable of oppressive gloom and fiery beauty in equal measure, this double-CD compilation captures the band at their intense best". Jeopardy (album)
''Jeopardy'' is the debut studio album by English post-punk band the Sound. It was released on November 1, 1980 by the record label Korova. The album fared poorly commercially but received critical acclaim. One single, "Heyday", was released from the album. Background Following their 1979 EP ''Physical World'', the band started work on a full-length album. Impressed by the rough mixes, Korova signed the group. ''Jeopardy'' was recorded inexpensively at Elephant Studios in London, and was produced by the Sound themselves and Nick Robbins. Adrian Janes, ex-member of the Outsiders along with Sound frontman Adrian Borland and Bob Lawrence, contributed writing to two tracks, despite not being a member of the Sound. Trouser Press
''Trouser Press'' was a rock and roll magazine started in New York in 1974 as a mimeographed fanzine by editor/publisher Ira Robbins, fellow fan of the Who Dave Schulps and Karen Rose under the name "Trans-Oceanic Trouser Press" (a reference to a song by the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band and an acronymic play on the British TV show ''Top of the Pops)''. Publication of the magazine ceased in 1984. The unexpired portion of mail subscriptions was completed by ''Rolling Stone'' sister publication ''Record'', which itself folded in 1985. ''Trouser Press'' has continued to exist in various formats. ''Shock of Daylight'' is an EP by English post-punk band the Sound, released in April 1984 on Statik Records in the UK and A&M Records in the US. The EP was seen by critics as a comeback for the band, after the band's critically and commercially disappointing previous album, 1982's '' All Fall Down''. Two singles were released from the EP, "Counting the Days" and "Golden Soldiers" (the latter in Spain only). The Stooges
The Stooges, originally billed as the Psychedelic Stooges, also known as Iggy and the Stooges, was an American rock band formed in Ann Arbor, Michigan, in 1967 by singer Iggy Pop, guitarist Ron Asheton, drummer Scott Asheton, and bassist Dave Alexander. Initially playing a raw, primitive style of rock and roll, the band sold few records in their original incarnation and gained a reputation for their confrontational performances, which often involved acts of self-mutilation by Iggy Pop. Roxy Music
Roxy Music are an English rock music, rock band formed in 1970 by Bryan Ferry—who became the band's lead vocalist and principal songwriter—and bassist Graham Simpson (musician), Graham Simpson. The other longtime members are Phil Manzanera (guitar), Andy Mackay (saxophone and oboe), and Paul Thompson (musician), Paul Thompson (drums and percussion).
