The Chair of Modern History at the University of Glasgow was founded in 1893 as the Chair of History. In 1956 the title was changed to Modern History to reflect the establishment of the Edwards Professor of Medieval History, Edwards Chair of Medieval History. It is the second-oldest chair of history in the United Kingdom outside of Oxbridge. Sönke Neitzel
Sönke Neitzel (born 26 June 1968) is a German historian who has written extensively about the Second World War. He is editor of the journal ''German History in the 20th Century'' and has written several books such as ''Soldaten: On Fighting, Killing and Dying; The Secret Second World War Tapes of German POWs'' based on recordings of German POWs held at Trent Park which he wrote with Harald Welzer. Professor Of Scottish History And Literature, Glasgow
The Chair of Scottish History and Literature at the University of Glasgow was founded in 1913, endowed by a grant from the receipts of the 1911 Scottish Exhibition held in Glasgow's Kelvingrove Park, as well as donations from the Merchants House of Glasgow and other donors. The chair has been held by a number of prominent historians of Scotland, including two Historiographers Royal. Although the chair is now based within the Department of History, it retains its original title. History The inaugural holder of the chair was Robert Rait, appointed in 1913, a graduate of King's College, Aberdeen (now the University of Aberdeen) and tutor at New College, Oxford. In this role he sought to engage more closely with students than was traditional for academics at the time, inviting students to tea at his home. Lynn Abrams
Lynn Abrams is a historian and Professor of History at the University of Glasgow, and a Fellow of the British Academy (2018). She is Chair in Modern History at the University of Glasgow, where her research and teaching interests include the history of women and gender relations in Britain, and oral history. Career Abrams has published widely in academic journals and edited volumes, and has published five books, including two on oral history theory. Colin Kidd
Colin Craig Kidd (born 5 May 1964) is a historian who specializes in American and Scottish history. He is currently Professor of History at the University of St Andrews, after he served as Professor of Intellectual History and the History of Political Thought at Queen's University Belfast, where he has worked since he left the University of Glasgow in 2010. Kidd is a fellow of All Souls College Oxford and a regular contributor to the ''London Review of Books'', where he commentates on topics such as current affairs, economics and politics, as well as reviewing literary works. Bernard Wasserstein
Bernard Wasserstein (born 22 January 1948 in London) is a British historian. Early life Bernard Wasserstein was born in London on 22 January 1948. Wasserstein's father, Abraham Wasserstein (1921–1995), born in Frankfurt, was Professor of Classics at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. His mother, Margaret (née Ecker, 1921–2017), was born in Budapest. He was educated at the High School of Glasgow and Wyggeston Boys' Grammar School, Leicester. He earned a BA in Modern History at Balliol College, Oxford in 1969 and a DPhil at Nuffield College, Oxford in 1974. Sir Hew Francis Anthony Strachan ( ), (born 1 September 1949) is a British military historian, well known for his leadership in scholarly studies of the British Army and the history of the First World War. He is currently professor of international relations at the University of St Andrews. Before that Strachan was the Chichele Professor of the History of War at All Souls College, Oxford.
