Probation (1932 Film)
''Probation'' (also known as ''Second Chances'') is an American Pre-Code 1932 film directed by Richard Thorpe and starring Clara Kimball Young and Betty Grable. The film was distributed by the Chesterfield Motion Pictures Corporation. Plot Ruth (Betty Grable) is a minor who is running with an uptown, older man. Ruth's brother, Nick (John Darrow), is unaware of his kid sister's activities. Ruth is turned in to the juvenile authorities by the well-meaning Mrs. Humphries (Clara Kimball Young). Nick finds a man in their apartment and proceeds to be arrested for beating up the man, who runs away before Nick is arrested. Nick is taken to night court and remanded to the custody of the judge's (J. Farrell MacDonald) niece, Janet, for six months as her chauffeur. Janet (Sally Blane) is the fiancé of Allen (Eddie Phillips), who is coincidentally the man who was beaten up by Nick. Betty Grable is on the verge of becoming a superstar, in the 1940s. Richard Thorpe
Richard Thorpe (born Rollo Smolt Thorpe; February 24, 1896 – May 1, 1991) was an American film director best known for his long career at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. Biography Born Rollo Smolt Thorpe in Hutchinson, Kansas, Richard Thorpe began his entertainment career performing in vaudeville and onstage. In 1921 he began in motion pictures as an actor and directed his first silent film in 1923. He went on to direct more than one hundred and eighty films. He worked frequently at the Poverty Row studio Chesterfield Pictures during the 1930s. The first full-length motion picture he directed for MGM was ''Last of the Pagans'' (1935) starring Ray Mala. At MGM, he teamed up with producer Pandro S. Matty Kemp
Matty Kemp (September 10, 1907 – December 12, 1999) was an American film actor. He appeared in more than 50 films between 1926 and 1943. After retiring from acting, Kemp produced many musical short films. In 1954, he contributed the story for the Jane Russell musical film ''The French Line''. A close friend of actor and musician Charles "Buddy" Rogers and his wife Mary Pickford, Kemp was an early manager of the Mary Pickford Foundation. David Durand (July 27, 1920 – July 25, 1998) was an American juvenile actor. Career Durand appeared in the silent film Tropic Madness (1928) when age 8, of which a complete version is considered lost. Eddie Phillips (August 14, 1899 – February 22, 1965) was an American actor. He appeared in 180 films between 1913 and 1952. He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and died in a traffic accident in Hollywood, California. He started as a child actor and during his career also amassed an extensive list of Broadway and television musical credits; once performing in the Soviet Union. Chesterfield Motion Pictures Corporation
Chesterfield Motion Picture Corporation, generally shortened to Chesterfield Pictures, was an American film production company of the 1920s and 1930s. The company head was George R. Batcheller, and the company worked in tandem with its sister studio, Invincible, which was led by Maury Cohen. The production company never owned its own studio and rented space at other studios, primarily Universal Pictures and RKO. Batcheller's target market was neighborhood theaters that weren't part of the big studios' theater chains. These smaller houses usually showed second- or third-run movies, and couldn't afford to show the newest, expensive feature films. Batcheller serviced these smaller theaters with smaller movies: low-budget productions that cost theater owners much less than big-studio attractions, and could play first-run.
