Proacrodon
''Proacrodon'' is a dubious genus of extinct mammal from South America. Its type species is ''Proacrodon transformatus''. The only known specimen, a lower premolar or molar, is now lost, and its affinities are unknown. In 1899, Santiago Roth named the new genus and species ''Proacrodon transformatus'' on the basis of a single tooth collected in Patagonia. The genus name comes from Greek πρό "before", άκρος "pointed", and όδών "tooth", and refers to the shape of the tooth, which rises higher in its anterior portion than its posterior portion. Roth compared the taxon to ''Megacrodon'', which he named in the same paper, and to ''Hyrachyus''. Florentino Ameghino synonymized ''Proacrodon'' with his own genus ''Trimerostephanus'' without seeing the specimen firsthand. In 1904, Palmer listed both ''Proacrodon'' and ''Trimerostephanos'' as members of Isotemnidae. Litopterna (from grc, λῑτή πτέρνα "smooth heel") is an extinct order of fossil hoofed mammals from the Cenozoic era. The order is one of the five great orders of South American ungulates that were endemic to the continent, until the Great American Biotic Interchange brought new ungulate species. Like other endemic South American mammals, their relationship to other mammal groups had long been unclear, but recent genetic and proteomic evidence indicates that their closest living relatives are Perissodactyls (odd-toed ungulates) including horses, rhinoceros, and tapirs, and that litopterns are closely related to notoungulates, another widespread group of South American ungulates. There were two major groups of litopterns: Proterotheriidae and Macraucheniidae. Proterotheriids were medium to large animals that evolved adaptations for fast running, and occupied a variety of niches that elsewhere were filled by animals such as goats and antelopes, mouse deer, and horses. ...

Santiago Roth (14 June 1850 – 4 August 1924) was a Swiss Argentine paleontologist and academic known for his fossil collections and Patagonian expeditions. Life Kaspar Jakob (Spanish: Santiago) was born and raised in Herisau, Canton Appenzell Ausserrhoden, Switzerland, as the oldest of 12 children. He attended school in the nearby town of St. Gallen, where his teacher Bernhard Wartmann raised his interest in the science of nature. Florentino Ameghino (born Giovanni Battista Fiorino Giuseppe Ameghino September 19, 1853 – August 6, 1911) was an Argentine naturalist, paleontologist, anthropologist and zoologist, whose fossil discoveries on the Argentine Pampas, especially on Patagonia, rank with those made in the western United States during the late 19th century. George Gaylord Simpson (June 16, 1902 – October 6, 1984) was an American paleontologist.
