Princess Pat Stakes
The Princess Pat Stakes was an American Thoroughbred horse race first run in 1937 at Chicago's Washington Park Race Track. A race for two-year-old fillies, except for 1941 and 1942 when it was open to fillies and mares age three and older, the Princess Pat Stakes was moved to Arlington Park in 1958. For most of its duration, the Princess Pat Stakes offered the largest purse of an American race for two-year-old fillies. In 1954, it was the world's richest race for 2-year-old fillies with a purse of $102,760. The Princess Pat Stakes was run in two divisions in 1961. William Lee Shoemaker (August 19, 1931 – October 12, 2003) was an American jockey. For 29 years he held the world record for total professional jockey victories. Early life Referred to as "Bill", "Willie," and "The Shoe", William Lee Shoemaker was born in the town of Fabens, Texas. Harry Trotsek
Harry E. Trotsek (April 18, 1912 – February 5, 1997) was an American Hall of Fame trainer and owner of Thoroughbred racehorses. He trained 96 stakes race winners including Champions Hasty Road, Moccasin, Oil Capitol, and Stan, and led all North American trainers in purse winnings in 1953. Trotsek was widely respected for his development of young jockeys including such riders as Johnny Sellers, Kenny Church and John Rotz. William John Hartack Jr. (December 9, 1932 – November 26, 2007), born in Colver, Pennsylvania, was a Hall of Fame jockey. Colver is in the northwestern part of Cambria Township, 7 miles (11 km) northwest of Ebensburg, the county seat. Early life and career Referred to by the media as both "Bill" and "Willie" (Hartack detested being called "Willie") during his racing career, Hartack grew up on a farm in the Blacklick Township area of Cambria County, Pennsylvania. Kenneth Church
Kenneth Stanley Church (March 24, 1930 – July 13, 2020) was a Canadian jockey in Thoroughbred horse racing. Apprenticeship Born in Windsor, Ontario, in his early teens Church began riding ponies and in 1946 got a job as an exercise rider at Old Woodbine Race Course in Toronto, Ontario. The following year, he was offered a chance to apprentice for future U.S. Racing Hall of Fame trainer Harry Trotsek who was widely recognized for his eye for riding talent and who also developed Hall of Fame jockeys, Johnny Sellers and John Rotz. Kenneth Church began competing in novice races for jockeys which Trotsek had organized at Detroit Fair Grounds Racetrack. Cain Hoy Stable
Cain Hoy Stable was a Thoroughbred racing stable and horse breeding operation with training facilities in Columbia, South Carolina, and Kissimmee, Florida. It was owned by Harry Guggenheim, who also raced horses in Europe. A founding member of the New York Racing Association, Guggenheim began racing in 1929 and originally raced as the Falaise Stable, the name of his Long Island, New York estate. In 1943, he renamed it the Cain Hoy Stable for his Cain Hoy Plantation, a timber and cattle plantation near Wando, South Carolina. The stable's racing colors were blue and white blocks with white sleeves and cap. In 1959, Cain Hoy Stable led all American owners in earnings. Woody Stephens
Woody Stephens (September 1, 1913 – August 22, 1998) was an American Thoroughbred horse racing Hall of Fame trainer. Biography Born Woodford Cefis Stephens in Stanton, Kentucky, he had a younger brother named William Ward Stephens who also became a successful trainer. Woody Stephens started in racing as a jockey at age 16 but within a few years switched to training horses. After working as an assistant for several years, in the late 1930s he started training on his own, taking on horses from various owners. Near the end of the 1950s, he was hired by the wealthy Harry Guggenheim as head trainer for his Cain Hoy Stable. The move proved very successful, with Stephens training several champions and winning a number of major stakes races, including the Kentucky Oaks three times.
