Prince's Cairn
The Prince's Cairn marks the traditional spot from where Prince Charles Edward Stuart embarked for France from Scotland on 20 September 1746 following the failure of the Jacobite rising of 1745. The cairn is located on the shores of Loch nan Uamh in Lochaber. It was erected in 1956 by th1745 Association a historical society dedicated to the study, recording and preservation of memories from the Jacobite period. Although the cairn commemorates the final departure of the Prince before his exile to France, Loch nan Uamh is also where the Young Pretender first stepped ashore on mainland Great Britain on 25 July 1745 and from where – in April 1746 – he escaped to the Hebrides after the defeat of his forces at the Battle of Culloden. Sound Of Arisaig
The Sound of Arisaig Lochaber, Scotland, separates the Arisaig peninsula to the north from the Moidart peninsula to the south. At the eastern, landward end, the sound is divided by Ardnish into two sea lochs. Loch nan Uamh lies to the north of Ardnish, Loch Ailort to the south. There are a number of small islands in the sound, of which Eilean nan Gobhar and Samalaman Island, both near to Glenuig on the south shore, are the largest. The A830 road, called the Road to the Isles, runs along the east end of Loch Ailort, and then crosses Ardnish before turning westwards along the north shore of Loch nan Uamh and the sound proper. The West Highland Line follows the same route. The A861 road follows the south shore of Loch Ailort and the sound proper as far west as Glenuig. Arisaig
Arisaig ( gd, Àrasaig) is a village in Lochaber, Inverness-shire. It lies south of Mallaig on the west coast of the Scottish Highlands, within the Rough Bounds. Arisaig is also the traditional name for part of the surrounding peninsula south of Loch Morar, extending east to Moidart. Etymologically, Arisaig means "safe bay". It lies in the Scottish council area of Highland and has a population of about 300. Antoine Walsh
Antoine Vincent Walsh (1703 – 1763), was an Irish shipowner and slave trader operating in Nantes, France, whose family were exiled Jacobites. Early life Antoine Walsh was the son of the Jacobite loyalist Philip Walsh (1666-1708), of Ballynacooly, County Kilkenny, a Waterford merchant, who settled in Saint Malo, Brittany, after the Treaty of Limerick in 1691, and who would die at sea on an African voyage. Philip Walsh married in 1695, at Saint Malo, Anne White (1675-1727), who was also an Irish Catholic exile. It was Philip who had conveyed the defeated James II of England from Kinsale, County Cork, Ireland to Saint Malo, Brittany, France, in 1690, after the Battle of the Boyne, thus starting the Walsh family's loyal connections to the exiled House of Stuart in France. Du Teillay (1744 Ship)
''Du Teillay'' was a French privateer ship, commissioned as such in Nantes in 1744 by Antoine Walsh (1703–1763), a shipowner of Irish descent born in Saint-Malo and slave trader operating from Nantes in the south of Brittany. She played a central role in the Jacobite rising of 1745, ferrying Charles Edward Stuart to Loch Nan Uamh with supplies and funds to support his cause. Ben Alder ( gd, Beinn Eallair) is the highest mountain in the remote area of the Scottish Highlands between Loch Ericht and Glen Spean. It rises to , making it the 25th highest Munro. Ewen MacPherson of Cluny, also known as "Cluny Macpherson" (11 February 1706 – 30 January 1764), was the Chief of Clan MacPherson during the Jacobite Rising of 1745.
