Prewitt is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in McKinley County, New Mexico, United States. Prewitt is located along Interstate 40, northwest of Grants. Prewitt has a post office with ZIP code 87045. Geography Prewitt is within the Baca/Prewitt ( Kin Łigaaí) Chapter House boundary in the "Checkerboard Area" of the Navajo Nation. This means that Prewitt lies within the external boundaries of the Navajo Nation, but contains a mix of tribal, BLMstate and private lands. It is a part of the Zuni Uplift, and is characterized by piñon/juniper woodland, red rock hoodoos, mesas, and desert grasslands. A Chapter is the most local form of government on the Navajo Nation. The Nation is broken into five agencies. Each agency contains chapters; currently there are 110 local chapters, each with their own chapter house. Chapters are semi-self autonomous, being able to decide most matters which concern their own chapter. Thoreau High School
Thoreau High School is a public high school in Thoreau, New Mexico. It is a part of Gallup-McKinley County Schools. Communities in its boundary include Thoreau, Continental Divide, Prewitt, and Smith Lake. History In 1964 the Navajo Tribal Council's advisory committee voted to allow for fewer than of land in Thoreau for the school district so it could establish Thoreau High School there; the tribe would get the land back the moment the land is not used for education purposes. The land was to include apartment buildings for faculty. The high school began in 1965 with grade 9, with other years added later. While an elementary school existed in the area previously, the number of students made the community decide it wanted a local high school. Gallup-McKinley County Public Schools
Gallup-McKinley County Schools (GMCS) is a school district based in Gallup, New Mexico which serves students from Gallup and surrounding areas of McKinley County. History Prior to 1980, the district had of land. That year parts left to form the Zuni School District. Previously the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) operated Manuelito Hall in Gallup, a dormitory which housed Native American students attending Gallup-McKinley schools. In 1973 it had about 300 students. That year the BIA closed Manuelito Hall, planning to move students to various boarding schools. The public school system's funding was not anticipated to be harmed by this closure. There were some families that wanted their children to remain at Gallup-McKinley schools as they perceived them to be better than BIA schools.
