The University of North Dakota (also known as UND or North Dakota) is a public research university in Grand Forks, North Dakota. It was established by the Dakota Territorial Assembly in 1883, six years before the establishment of the state of North Dakota. Grand Forks, North Dakota
Grand Forks is the third-largest city in the state of North Dakota (after Fargo and Bismarck) and the county seat of Grand Forks County. According to the 2020 census, the city's population was 59,166. Grand Forks, along with its twin city of East Grand Forks, Minnesota, forms the center of the Grand Forks, ND-MN Metropolitan Statistical Area, which is often called Greater Grand Forks or the Grand Cities. Located on the western banks of the north-flowing Red River of the North, in a flat region known as the Red River Valley, the city is prone to flooding. The Red River Flood of 1997 devastated the city. Andrew Armacost
Andrew "Uncle Andy" Armacost is the 13th and current president of the University of North Dakota, and a retired brigadier general in the United States Air Force. He previously served as the dean of the faculty of the United States Air Force Academy. Early life and education Armacost is a native of Glendale, Wisconsin, where he graduated from Nicolet High School in 1985. He later graduated from Northwestern University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. His father served the United States Coast Guard and, as his son would later do, earned a PhD in operations research. Armacost attended Northwestern University, where he graduated in 1989 with honors as a ROTC Distinguished Graduate with a Bachelor of Science in industrial engineering. Homer Sprague
Homer Baxter Sprague (October 19, 1829 – March 23, 1918) was an American author, educator, abolitionist, and Lieutenant Colonel of the Union Army. A native of Sutton, Massachusetts, Sprague was a Captain of the 13th Connecticut Infantry Regiment in 1861 when the American Civil War began, and quickly rose to the rank of Colonel before being captured as a prisoner of war by the Confederate Army in 1864. In 1865 he was released in a prisoner exchange, and remained active within the military until the end of the war. He served as President of Mills College in California from 1885 to 1887, and was appointed President of the University of North Dakota in 1887. An early progressive voice in education, he served as president of Adelphi Academy in New York as it first opened its doors to female students. Charles E. Kupchella (born July 7, 1942) is an American academic administrator who served as the 10th president of the University of North Dakota (UND) in Grand Forks, North Dakota. He began his presidency in 1999 and retired in 2008. He was succeeded by Robert Kelley (academic administrator), Robert Kelley effective July 1, 2008. Early life and education Kupchella is a native of Nanty Glo, Pennsylvania. In 1964, he graduated from Indiana University of Pennsylvania with a B.S.Ed. and a Pennsylvania biology teaching certification. Robert O. Kelley (born 1944) was the List of Presidents of the University of North Dakota, 11th president of the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks, North Dakota. His term began on July 1, 2008. Kelley was previously dean of the College of Health Sciences and professor of medical education and public health at the University of Wyoming. Kelley earned a B.S. in biology and chemistry from Abilene Christian University in 1965, and earned a M.S. in Cell biology, cell and developmental biology in 1966 from the University of California, Berkeley, where he would go on to earn his doctorate from in 1969. Edward Thomas Schafer (born August 8, 1946) is an American businessman and politician who was the 30th governor of North Dakota from 1992 to 2000. Schafer also served as the 29th United States Secretary of Agriculture from 2008 to 2009, appointed by President George W. Bush.
