National Congress (Ecuador)
The National Congress (Spanish: ''Congreso Nacional)'' was the unicameral legislative branch of the government of Ecuador prior to November 2007. Under the 1998 Constitution, Congress met in Quito and was made up of 100 deputies ''(diputados).'' Each of the country's 22 provinces returned a minimum of two deputies plus one additional seat for every 200,000 inhabitants. It was dissolved on 29 November 2007 by the Ecuadorian Constituent Assembly and replaced by the National Assembly of Ecuador under the 2008 Constitution. Its demise came when it was already weakened by the disfavorable perception of the Ecuadorian public opinion, which for decades saw it as a corrupt and incompetent entity, as well as a venue for violent disputes between its members and political intrigues, such as the removal of Presidents Abdalá Bucaram Ortiz in 1997 and Lucio Gutiérrez in 2005. Juan León Mera Martínez (28 June 1832 – 13 December 1894) was an Ecuadorian essayist, novelist, politician and painter. His best-known works are the Ecuadorian National Hymn and the novel ''Cumandá'' (1879). Additionally, in his political career, he was a functionary of president Gabriel García Moreno. Biography He was born in Ambato on 28 June 1832 and died in the same city on 13 December 1894. His father, Pedro Antonio Mera Gómez was a businessman while his mother Josefa Martínez Vásconez, raised her only son alone due to the fact that he abandoned her during her pregnancy. His infancy was humble while during his first years of life he lived at the “Los Molinos” country property, located in Ambato. Luis Cordero Crespo
Luis Benjamín Cordero y Crespo (6 April 1833 – 30 January 1912) was President of Ecuador 1 July 1892 to 16 April 1895. Cordero was born 6 April 1833 in the Cañar province of Ecuador to parents Gregorio Cordero and Josefa Crespo. Cordero studied at the Seminary High School in Cuenca, and later the Central University of Ecuador in Quito. In 1865 he became a lawyer, arguing cases before the Supreme Court of Cuenca. After his career in law, Cordero began publishing poetry and in 1892 published the first Quicha-Spanish dictionary. Political career Luis Cordero was also a politician, serving as a member of the Progresistas, a liberal Catholic political party, and was a member of the provisional governing junta which led the ''Progresistas'' to power in 1883. Rafael Pólit Cevallos (1823 - 1897) studied at the Central University of Quito and joined the Conservative Party of Ecuador of Gabriel García Moreno. He was President of the Municipal Council of Guayaquil. He was President of the Senate when Congress resumed after the assassination of García Moreno on 6 August 1875. From 4 October 1875 - 9 December 1875 he held the combined office of Minister of the Interior and Minister of Foreign Affairs. He was also Minister of Finance. In 1878 the government sent him into exile, but later he returned. On 2 May 1895 he became head of the government of Guayas, but resigned within a month.
