President Of The Navajo Nation
The President of the Navajo Nation is the head of state of the Navajo Nation. The office was created in 1991 following restructuring of the national government. The President and Vice President are elected every four years. The Navajo Nation President shall serve no more than two consecutive terms. As outlined in the Navajo Nation Code §1001-1006, until 2016, office holders had to be fluent in the Navajo language among other declared qualifications. Presently, fluency is to be determined by the Navajo voters when they cast ballots. Presidential line of succession The Navajo Nation Code defines who may become or act as president upon the absence of a sitting president or a president-elect. Jonathan Nez
Jonathan Nez (born May 26, 1975) is the 9th and current President of the Navajo Nation. He was elected in the 2018 election after having served as Vice President from 2015 to 2019. Earlier in his career, Jonathan Nez served as a council delegate representing Tsah Bii Kin, Navajo Mountain, Shonto, & Oljato Chapters. Early life and education Nez was born in Tuba City, Arizona, and attended Northland Pioneer College and Northern Arizona University (NAU). Frank Chee Willeto
Frank Chee Willeto (June 6, 1925 – June 23, 2012) was an American politician and Navajo code talker during World War II. Willeto served as the vice president of the Navajo Nation under President Milton Bluehouse, Sr. from his appointment in August 1998 until January 1999, when the Begaye administration took office. Early life Willeto was born in Crownpoint, New Mexico, on June 6, 1925. According to the ''Navajo Times'', Willeto was "Bit'ahnii (Folded Arms Clan), born for Tódích'íi'nii (Bitter Water Clan). Russell Begaye is a Navajo politician who served as the 8th president of Navajo Nation from May 2015 to January 2019. He was the second New Mexican Navajo to hold the Navajo Presidency. Early life and education Born in Shiprock, New Mexico, Begaye graduated from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) in 1974 with a degree in political science.
