Ángel Víctor Torres Pérez (: born 30 March 1966) is a Spanish politician who serves as the president of the Canary Islands. He is the secretary-general of the Socialist Party of the Canaries (PSC–PSOE). Early life and education Born on 30 March 1966 in Arucas, in the island of Gran Canaria, Ángel Víctor Torres obtained a degree in Hispanic Philology at the University of La Laguna. He became a highschool professor of language and literature in 1991. Career Torres entered politics in 1999 when he became a municipal councillor in Arucas elected in the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE) list, serving as mayor of the municipality in two spells (2003–2007 and 2011–2015). Paulino Rivero Baute (born 11 February 1952 in El Sauzal, Tenerife, Spain) is a Spanish politician and teacher. A member of the Canarian Coalition, he is the former president of the autonomous community of the Canary Islands. Biography Prior to his career in politics, Rivero was a primary school teacher; he received his diploma from the University of La Laguna. In the 1979 regional elections, the first such elections under the Spanish Constitution of 1978, Rivero was elected as the mayor of El Sauzal, a position he held until 1997. Rivero initially represented the Union of the Democratic Centre, but in 1983 he switched to the Agrupación Tinerfeña de Independientes, a group that eventually formed part of the Canarian Coalition. The Canarian Coalition ( es, Coalición Canaria, CC) is a regionalist, Canarian nationalist political party in Spain operating in the Canary Islands. The party's aim is for greater autonomy for the islands but not independence. It has been labeled as both conservative and liberal. The party governed the Canary Islands from 1993 to 2019. It usually negotiates with the plurality party at the Cortes to form a majority in exchange for resources for the islands.
