Prescott Durand Crout
Prescott Durand Crout (July 28, 1907 – September 25, 1984) was an American mathematician. Crout was born in Ohio, but lived and worked in Massachusetts. In 1929 he finished the MIT class. His PhD thesis (supervisor: George Rutledge) was entitled "The Approximation of Functions and Integrals by a Linear Combination of Functions".On January 2, 1933 he married Charlotte Louise Zander. They had four children. He was member of the MIT Faculty of Mathematics from 1934 to 1973 and emeritus from 1973 to his death in 1984. He belonged to the Radiation Laboratory staff from 1941 to 1945. His students at the MIT were Francis Hildebrand (1940), Carl Nordling (1941), Frank Bothwell (1946), Norman Painter (1947), Merle Andrew (1948), Frederick Holt (1950), and Carl Steeg, Jr. (1952). He died, aged 77, in Lexington, Middlesex, Massachusetts. Francis Hildebrand
Francis Begnaud Hildebrand (1915 – 29 November 2002) was an American mathematician. He was a Professor of mathematics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) from 1940 until 1984. Hildebrand was known for his many influential textbooks in mathematics and numerical analysis. Education and career Hildebrand received his bachelor's degree in 1936 and a master's degree in 1938 from Washington & Jefferson College, both in mathematics. He then received his Ph.D. degree from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1940 under the supervision of Prescott Durand Crout. He also received an honorary doctorate from Washington and Jefferson College in 1969. During World War II, he worked for two years in the Radiation Laboratory. At MIT, he taught 18.075 and 18.076, the classes on advanced calculus for engineering students. Crout Matrix Decomposition
In linear algebra, the Crout matrix decomposition is an LU decomposition which decomposes a matrix into a lower triangular matrix (L), an upper triangular matrix (U) and, although not always needed, a permutation matrix (P). It was developed by Prescott Durand Crout. The Crout matrix decomposition algorithm differs slightly from the Doolittle method. Doolittle's method returns a unit lower triangular matrix and an upper triangular matrix, while the Crout method returns a lower triangular matrix and a unit upper triangular matrix. So, if a matrix decomposition of a matrix A is such that: :A = LDU being L a unit lower triangular matrix, D a diagonal matrix and U a unit upper triangular matrix, then Doolittle's method produces :A = L(DU) and Crout's method produces :A = (LD)U.
