Prendergast (surname)
Prendergast is a British and Irish surname. Etymology This toponymic surname may derive from ''prender'' from a Germanic word for fire or conflagration (cf. brand) where the ''b'' became ''p'' due to fortition and ''gast'' (cf. geest) from a germanic word for wasteland or dry and infertile land meaning the location could have been a burn-beat area. Others think the name is a Saxonized form of Bryn y Gest from the Welsh bryn meaning hill and gest a lenition of ''cest'' which means belly or swelling or a deep glen between two mountains having but one opening. It could also lessly come from Pren-dwr-gwest, the inn by the tree near the water. The right etymology is probably Pen-dre-gast. The suffix ast (cf. gast) is of Welsh origin like the names of the cromlech chamber tomb of Penllech yr Ast (''the chief slab of the bitch'') or Llech-yr-ast (''Bitch's stone''), in Llangoedmor, Cardiganshire or Gwâl y Filiast (''Lair of the Greyhound Bitch'') or Carn Nant-yr-ast or Llety'r Filias ...

Prendergast, Pembrokeshire
Prendergast is a former village and parish in Pembrokeshire, Wales, now a suburb of Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire's county town. The name survives as an electoral ward of Haverfordwest. The Western Cleddau forms the parish's western boundary, and the Hiog, a tributary of the Cleddau, the eastern boundary. Name The origin of the village's name is possibly linked to a family named Prendergast (surname), Prendergast, whose earliest-known ancestor was Maurice, who was possibly a Cambro-Normans, Cambro-Norman. However it is thought he himself may be named for the town, especially as the surname carries the affix of ''De''. The name could also very likely be Welsh in origin and either poorly rendered from its original form over time, or if originating as a surname; it may have been Anglicised in later records. Examples are a potentially Anglicised form of ''Bryn y Gest'' from the Welsh ''bryn'' meaning hill and ''gest'', a lenition of ''cest'' which means ''belly'' or ''swelling'' or ''a ...

Prendergast School
Prendergast School is a girls' secondary school and sixth form located on Hilly Fields, Brockley, in the London Borough of Lewisham. It has an independent board of governors. The school motto is from Chaucer's Prologue to ''The Canterbury Tales:'' "Trouthe and Honour, Fredom and Curteisye". (In Middle English and in this context, "fredom" is generosity, not liberty.) History Prendergast Grammar School was founded as a fee-paying grammar school in Rushey Green, Catford in 1890 under the will of the late Dr. Joseph Prendergast, DD (Cantab), 1791–1875, Headmaster of Colfe's School 1831–1857. His endowment was supplemented from several quarters, including some ancient charities associated with the parish of Lewisham. In the first half of the 20th century the school accepted an increasing number of scholarship girls from LCC Elementary schools. Following the Education Act 1944, the school became a maintained grammar school with voluntary aided status. In the 1970s, with ...
