Premio Regina Elena
The Premio Regina Elena is a Group 3 flat horse race in Italy open to three-year-old thoroughbred fillies. It is run over a distance of 1,600 metres (about 1 mile) at Capannelle in April or May. It is Italy's equivalent of the 1000 Guineas, a famous race in England. History The event is named after Elena of Montenegro, who became Queen of Italy when her husband acceded to the throne in 1900. It was established in 1907, and the inaugural running was won by Madree. The title of the race was shortened to Premio Elena in 1943. It reverted to its original name in 1965. For a period the Premio Regina Elena held Group 1 status. It was downgraded to Group 2 level in 1988, and to Group 3 in 2007. Several winners of the Premio Regina Elena have gone on to win the Oaks d'Italia. The first was Makufa in 1912, and the most recent was Cherry Collect in 2012. Capannelle Racecourse
Capannelle Racecourse ( it, Ippodromo delle Capannelle) is a horse racing venue in Rome, Italy. The course was constructed in 1881, and it was rebuilt in 1926 to a design by Paolo Vietti-Violi. It was recently the venue of two Group 1 flat races – the Premio Lydia Tesio (downgraded to Group 2 in 2019) and the Premio Roma (downgraded to Group 2 in 2017). The track also stages the most valuable flat race in Italy, the Derby Italiano, which was downgraded to Group 2 status in 2009. Group 2 races include the Premio Ribot and the Premio Presidente della Repubblica. William Fisher Hunter Carson, OBE (born 16 November 1942) is a retired jockey in thoroughbred horse racing. Life and career Best known as "Willie", Carson was born in Stirling, Scotland in 1942. He was apprenticed to Captain Gerald Armstrong at his stables at Tupgill, North Yorkshire. His first winner in Britain was Pinker's Pond in a seven-furlong apprentice handicap at Catterick Bridge Racecourse on 19 July 1962. He was British Champion Jockey five times (1972, 1973, 1978, 1980 and 1983), won 17 British Classic Races, and passed 100 winners in a season 23 times for a total of 3,828 wins, making him the fourth most successful jockey in Great Britain. Sylvain Guillot
Sylvain Guillot (born 1972) is a French jockey. He is married to the sister of fellow jockey Yannick Fouin and has one son, Thomas. For three years from about 1987, Guillot did an apprenticeship with Jean-François Daubin at Maisons-Laffitte. In 1990, he joined Jean-Paul Gallorini's stable and won 15 races on the flat and eight over the jumps. Guillot's greatest successes came in 1994 when he won the Grand Critérium at Longchamp on Goldmark and, just two weeks later, the Champion Stakes at Newmarket, riding Dernier Empereur. Jim Bolger (racehorse Trainer)
James S. Bolger (born 25 December 1941) is a thoroughbred racehorse trainer and breeder based in Coolcullen in County Kilkenny. For many years, he has been recognised as one of the racing greats in Ireland. Aidan O'Brien, Tony McCoy and Paul Carberry were all apprenticed to him before gaining professional recognition in their own right. During the 2006 flat season, Bolger trained Teofilo to go unbeaten at the age of two. This five-race unbeaten streak included victories in the Group 1 National Stakes and Dewhurst Stakes. Talk of an English Triple Crown bid was imminent, but Teofilo suffered a career-ending injury in the lead up to the 2,000 Guineas and never saw a racecourse again. Edward Retz "Eddie" Maple (born November 8, 1948, in Carrollton, Ohio) is a retired American thoroughbred horse racing jockey. One of eight siblings, he is an older brother to jockey Sam Maple, who won more than 2,500 races. Maple began riding horses at age 12, and won his first race as a professional at age 17 at Ascot Park in Akron. Ohio.
