Premier Calendar
The British Cycling Premier Calendar Road Race Series is a season-long competition run by British Cycling. It comprises a series of road bicycle races for the country's top domestic road riders. Organisation and events In 2010 points were awarded for the first 20 places in each single day road race and for the top 20 overall in stage races as follows: 100, 85, 75, 66, 58, 51, 45, 39, 34, 29, 25, 21, 18, 15, 12, 10, 8, 6, 4, 2. For each stage of a stage race (including prologues) the top 15 riders are awarded points as follows: 30, 25, 21, 17, 14, 12, 10, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1. Nowadays the series includes an award for the highest placed U23 rider in the final overall standings. Riders may have up to 10 counting races. Chris Lillywhite
Chris Lillywhite (born 15 June 1966) is an English competitive cyclist from East Molesey, Surrey. Cycling career He won the Milk Race in 1993, and has competed on the continent. He was a professional rider between 1987 and 1999. Lillywhite represented England at the 1984, 1994 and 1998 Commonwealth Games; he was disqualified from medal contention when it was found he illegally took hold of Australian competitor, Grant Rice's riding shorts and pulled him back on the sprint to the finishing line in the men's road race in Victoria Canada, 1994. Road Bicycle Racing
Road bicycle racing is the cycle sport discipline of road cycling, held primarily on Road surface, paved roads. Road racing is the most popular professional sport, professional form of bicycle racing, in terms of numbers of competitors, events and spectators. The two most common competition formats are mass start events, where riders start simultaneously (though sometimes with a Handicapping, handicap) and race to a set finish point; and time trials, where individual time trial, individual riders or team time trial, teams race a course alone against the clock. Stage races or "tours" take multiple days, and consist of several mass-start or time-trial stages ridden consecutively. Professional racing originated in Western Europe, centred in France, Spain, Italy and the Low Countries. Jeff Williams (cyclist)
Jeffrey Williams (born 18 August 1958) is an English former professional road racing cyclist from Manchester. He rode for Great Britain at the Olympic Games, and won several national championship titles. Cycling career In 1979 Williams won his first British National Hill Climb Championships setting a new course record that still stands to this day. A rival, Andy Hitchens, who remembers it well, said: "Williams looked like he'd been on starvation rations for months — he was built like a sparrow. Some people assume that there was a howling tailwind that day, but there wasn't. It was sunny, but cool.” In 1980 Williams joined the Manchester Wheelers' Club and was expected to win International honours during the next two or three seasons. John Tanner (cyclist)
John Tanner (born 4 February 1968) is a retired British Professional cyclist from Yorkshire. Cycling career Tanner competed in the 1996 and 2000 Olympic Games. He represented England in the road race, at the 1990 Commonwealth Games in Auckland, New Zealand, the 1998 Commonwealth Games and 2002 Commonwealth Games. Simeon Hempsall
Simeon Hempsall (20 November 1969) is a former racing cyclist who competed in the road race at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona and finished 36th of 84. He also competed in the 1994 Commonwealth Games. Hempsall rode as a professional between 1994 and 1998. He is now an osteopath in Sheffield and Chesterfield. Darryl Webster
Darryl James Webster (born 7 May 1962) is a former English professional cyclist from Walsall. Cycling career He rode for Great Britain at the Olympic Games and won twenty three national championship titles. He also famously won a stage in the 1988 Nissan Classic from a 101-mile solo break. Webster has always claimed to be strongly against the use of drugs in sport, but in April 2013 he was caught growing cannabis worth £24,000. He represented England and competed in the 4,000 metres individual pursuit and won a bronze medal in the 4,000 metres team pursuit, at the 1982 Commonwealth Games in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. Jon Clay
Jonathan Clay, better known as Jonny Clay (born 26 June 1963) is a British former professional cross-country, track and road racing cyclist. A silver medalist in the individual pursuit at the 1998 Commonwealth Games, Clay was also part of the team pursuit line up which took the bronze medal at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney. After retiring from competitive cycling in 2000, he was appointed British Cycling’s Regional Talent Manager for the North East. In 2004 he took over management of the membership department before being appointed Cycle Sport and Membership Director of British Cycling in 2009. A winner of several Premier Calendar events, he now helps to organise some of the races. Clay is also a committee member for the Dave Rayner fund, which assists young cyclists to race on the continent, and hopefully, turn professional. Paul Curran (cyclist)
Paul Curran (born 15 January 1961) is a former professional English racing cyclist from Thornaby, North Yorkshire. Curran rode for Great Britain in the Olympic Games, won the national road championship and won several medals at the Commonwealth Games. With wins in top amateur races in France, he could probably have secured a professional contract with a continental cycling team but preferred to remain in Britain. Cycling career Curran began riding for his local cycling club Stockton Wheelers and at the age of 14 completed a ten-mile time trial at Crathorne, North Yorkshire in 24–49. It was obvious he had talent when in 1977 he dominated the English schools national grass and track championship winning all three individual titles in the over-15-years category. Joey McLoughlin
Joey McLoughlin (born 3 December 1964) is an English former professional cyclist from Liverpool. He grew up on the Cantril Farm housing estate in Liverpool, the youngest of 11 children. As a child and teenager, he was a neighbour of many people who went on to be famous, including footballers Ian Bishop, David Fairclough and Mick Quinn, musicians Paul Rutherford (Frankie Goes to Hollywood), and most members of The Farm, along with actor and comedian Craig Charles. McLoughlin's talent and aggressive riding as a junior and young senior caused excitement in the British cycling press. He turned professional in 1985 and in his second year came 4th in the Dutch one-day classic, the Amstel Gold Race. Peter Longbottom
Peter Longbottom (13 May 1959 – 10 February 1998) was a British road racing and time triallist cyclist. He won more than 40 national championship medals and won bronze and silver medals in the team time trial event at the 1990 and 1994 Commonwealth Games. Malcolm Elliott
Malcolm Elliott (born 1 July 1961) is a former English professional cyclist, whose professional career has lasted from 1984 to 1997 when he retired and from 2003 up to 2011 when he made his comeback in British domestic racing. Known as a sprinter, his career includes three stages and the points classification in the Vuelta a España, two gold medals in the Commonwealth Games, and winning the amateur Milk Race and its professional version, the Kellogg's Tour. He rode and finished the Tour de France in 1987 and 1988. Elliott also competed at the Olympic Games in 1980 and 1996.
