Prelude To Waking
''Prelude to Waking : A Novel in the First Person and Parentheses'' (1950) is a novel by Australian writer Miles Franklin, which was originally published under the author's pseudonym "Brent of Bin Bin". Story outline The novel is set in England, France and the USA, in the period immediately following World War I. The story is told by Nigel Barraclough about Merlin Giltinane and her father and brother from Australia. Critical reception A reviewer in ''The Sydney Morning Herald'' noted that the author had written some fine novels using this pseudonym but: "''Prelude to Waking'', which carries a note by the author, dated 1925, will only detract from that reputation. It is a shallow tale of unreal people, built shakily and ornately on a slight situation, and told in an irritatingly affected style." Similarly Gladys Hain in ''The Argus'' was also disappointed: "Having enjoyed earlier books by Brent of Bin Bin who still remains anonymous, the reader will approach "Prelude To Waking ...

Miles Franklin
Stella Maria Sarah Miles Franklin (14 October 187919 September 1954), known as Miles Franklin, was an Australian writer and feminist who is best known for her novel ''My Brilliant Career'', published by Blackwoods of Edinburgh in 1901. While she wrote throughout her life, her other major literary success, ''All That Swagger'', was not published until 1936. She was committed to the development of a uniquely Australian form of literature, and she actively pursued this goal by supporting writers, literary journals, and writers' organisations. She has had a long-lasting impact on Australian literary life through her endowment of a major annual prize for literature about "Australian Life in any of its phases", the Miles Franklin Award. Her impact was further recognised in 2013 with the creation of the Stella Prize, awarded annually for the best work of literature by an Australian woman. Life and career Franklin was born at Talbingo, New South Wales, and grew up in the Brindabella ...

English Language
English is a West Germanic language of the Indo-European language family, with its earliest forms spoken by the inhabitants of early medieval England. It is named after the Angles, one of the ancient Germanic peoples that migrated to the island of Great Britain. Existing on a dialect continuum with Scots, and then closest related to the Low Saxon and Frisian languages, English is genealogically West Germanic. However, its vocabulary is also distinctively influenced by dialects of France (about 29% of Modern English words) and Latin (also about 29%), plus some grammar and a small amount of core vocabulary influenced by Old Norse (a North Germanic language). Speakers of English are called Anglophones. The earliest forms of English, collectively known as Old English, evolved from a group of West Germanic (Ingvaeonic) dialects brought to Great Britain by Anglo-Saxon settlers in the 5th century and further mutated by Norse-speaking Viking settlers starting in the 8th and 9th ...

My Career Goes Bung
''My Career Goes Bung: Purporting to be the Autobiography of Sybylla Penelope Melvyn'' is a satirical novel by Australian author Stella "Miles" Franklin, and the sequel to her widely acclaimed debut novel, ''My Brilliant Career''. Written 1902−1904, revised c. 1935, but not published until 1946, 45 years after the previous work, it was written "as a corrective" to public perceptions of autobiographical details in what was supposedly fiction. Cockatoos (novel)
''Cockatoos : A Story of Youth and Exodists'' (1954) is a novel by Australian writer Miles Franklin. It was originally published under the author's pseudonym "Brent of Bin Bin". Story outline This novel in the "Brent of Bin Bin" series follows the story of 16-year-old Ignez Milford who wants to leave her farming community to pursue a singing career. Critical reception A reviewer in ''The West Australian'' noted the need for some knowledge of the series to date: "'It would be difficult fairly to review the fourth Brent of Bin Bin novel out of context with its forerunners and the long sustained legend of their authorship. The uninitiated might well find himself bewildered by so vast a company of characters, intermarried or otherwise associated through two or three generations and into which he is plunged, a stranger, in the opening chapters of ''Cockatoos''...However, to those already schooled in the tradition of Brent of Bin Bin, ''Cockatoos'' will be hailed as a welcome addi ...

Novels By Miles Franklin
A novel is a relatively long work of narrative fiction, typically written in prose and published as a book. The present English word for a long work of prose fiction derives from the for "new", "news", or "short story of something new", itself from the la, novella, a singular noun use of the neuter plural of ''novellus'', diminutive of ''novus'', meaning "new". Some novelists, including Nathaniel Hawthorne, Herman Melville, Ann Radcliffe, John Cowper Powys, preferred the term "romance" to describe their novels. According to Margaret Doody, the novel has "a continuous and comprehensive history of about two thousand years", with its origins in the Ancient Greek and Roman novel, in Chivalric romance, and in the tradition of the Italian renaissance novella.Margaret Anne Doody''The True Story of the Novel'' New Brunswick, NJ: Rutgers University Press, 1996, rept. 1997, p. 1. Retrieved 25 April 2014. The ancient romance form was revived by Romanticism, especially the historica ...
