Preferred Pictures
Preferred Pictures was an American film production company of the silent era. Founded in 1920 by the producer B. P. Schulberg following his departure from Paramount Pictures, it was an independent film, independent, either distributing its own films or releasing them through First National Pictures. Schulberg's partners were J.G. Bachmann and Al Lichtman, and many of the company's earliest productions featured the actress Katherine MacDonald. She was replaced as the company's leading star by Clara Bow. In 1925 the company ran into financial trouble. Schulberg was lured back to Paramount and brought Bow with him. The final few releases under the Preferred Pictures label were released in 1926.Slide p.162 Many of these were released by the company only in certain U.S. state, states, with other distributors handling them in other regions. ''Shadows'' is a dramatic 1922 silent film starring Lon Chaney, Marguerite De La Motte, Harrison Ford and John Sainpolis. ''Shadows'' is a tale of a gentle Chinese immigrant trying to make a life for himself in a small New England town who comes across a vile plot to blackmail two good townspeople. It was directed by Tom Forman. The screenplay was written by Eve Unsell and Hope Loring, based on ''Ching, Ching, Chinaman'', a short story by Wilbur Daniel Steele. The photography was by Harry Perry, and Louis Gottschalk supplied the music score, for which Eve Unsell also wrote the lyrics. The following year, as Chaney was preparing to star in ''The Hunchback of Notre Dame'', he suggested Marguerite De La Motte for the role of Esmeralda, but the part went to Patsy Ruth Miller instead. ''April Showers'' is a 1923 American silent romantic film directed by Tom Forman starring Colleen Moore. It is not known whether the film currently survives. Plot Danny O'Rourke is the son of a police officer who was killed in the line of duty. Eager to join the police force, Danny fails his exams. The failure causes him to neglect his sweetheart Maggie, whose father is a police lieutenant. His attentions turn instead towards society girl Miriam Welton. When Danny’s sister, Shannon, is arrested for shoplifting, Danny turns to boxing to save her. He works his way towards the championship but discovers the final bought has been rigged.
