Patricia Preece
Patricia Preece, Lady Spencer (22 January 1894 – 19 May 1966), born Ruby Vivian Preece, was an English artist, associated with the Bloomsbury Group, and the second wife of painter Stanley Spencer, for whom she modelled. It was later discovered that nearly all of the artwork exhibited and sold by Preece was painted by her lifelong lover, Dorothy Hepworth. As a teenager, in 1911, Preece was involved in the death of dramatist W. S. Gilbert. While swimming in his lake, she lost her footing and called out; the 74-year-old Gilbert dived in to assist her, but he died of a heart attack. She soon adopted the name Patricia and became engaged, but her progressive views displeased her fiancé, who terminated their engagement. In 1918 Preece met Hepworth at the Slade School of Fine Art. After further studies in Paris, the two returned to Britain. David Douglas Preece (born 26 August 1976) is an English football journalist and commentator and a former professional player and coach who played as a goalkeeper. He made the majority of his appearances for Darlington, Aberdeen and the Danish club Silkeborg. His final professional appearance came on 2 November 2013 for Lincoln City against Welling United. Career Early career Preece was born Sunderland, Tyne and Wear. He began his football career in his hometown at Sunderland but failed to make a senior appearance before joining Darlington for free on a two-year deal. William Henry Preece
Sir William Henry Preece (15 February 1834 – 6 November 1913) was a Welsh electrical engineer and inventor. Preece relied on experiments and physical reasoning in his life's work. Upon his retirement from the Post Office in 1899, Preece was made a Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath (KCB) in the 1899 Birthday Honours. Biography Preece was born in Caernarfon (Gwynedd), Wales. He was educated at King's College School and King's College London. Preece studied at the Royal Institution in London (Great Britain) under Michael Faraday. He later was the consulting engineer for the Post Office (1870s). He became Engineer-in-Chief of the British General Post Office in 1892. He developed several improvements in railroad signalling system that increased railway safety. He played his college football at Oregon State, where he was a successful option quarterback. David William Preece (28 May 1963 – 20 July 2007) was an English professional footballer who played in midfield. He was born in Bridgnorth. He played three times for the England B team. Career Preece began his career as an apprentice with Walsall, turning professional in July 1980. His debut came the following year, as a substitute in the 2–1 win against Chester City. He was signed by Luton Town manager David Pleat in December 1984 and scored on his debut, a 1–0 win at home to Aston Villa. He went on to win a League Cup winners medal with Luton in 1988 and played nearly 400 times for Luton's first team. He had a testimonial game against Manchester United in 1995 before moving to Derby County on a free transfer in August that year. Jenny Preece is an American academic who is the Dean Emerita (2005–2015) of the College of Information Studies, a Professor at the University of Maryland, and a member of the University of Maryland Human-Computer Interaction Lab. She researches online communities and is known for her work on what makes such a community successful, and how usability factors interact with sociability in online communities. Life and work Preece gained her Ph.D. at the Open University, later becoming faculty there. She went on to be a Research Professor of Information Systems and founding Director of the Research Center for People and Systems Interaction at London South Bank University in London. At the University of Maryland, she has studied how online communities can stimulate and support social engagement. Her current work is on citizen science and environmental education. Tim Preece (born 5 August 1938) is an English actor. He has appeared on British television since the 1960s and also acted on stage. Early life Preece was born in Shrewsbury in Shropshire and was educated at the Priory Grammar School for Boys, Shrewsbury. He trained as an actor at the Bristol Old Vic. Prof Isaac Arthur Preece FRSE FRIC FIB (1907–1964) was a 20th century British biochemist and brewing scientist. He was the first person to suggest the addition of ammonium sulphate in the brewing process. Life He was born on 19 March 1907 at 90 Worcester Street in Birmingham the son of Isaac Arthur Preece, a bassinette maker, and his wife, Isabel Wright. He was educated at Birmingham Central Secondary School. He studied Chemistry at Birmingham University gaining two postgraduate doctorates (DSc and PhD). From around 1930 he began lecturing in Biochemistry, with an emphasis on brewing, at Heriot Watt University.
