Eastern Air Lines, also colloquially known as Eastern, was a major United States airline from 1926 to 1991. Before its dissolution, it was headquartered at Miami International Airport in an unincorporated area of Miami-Dade County, Florida. Eastern was one of the "Legacy carrier#Defunct legacy carriers, Big Four" domestic airlines created by the Air Mail scandal, Spoils Conferences of 1930, and was headed by World War I flying ace Eddie Rickenbacker in its early years. It had a near monopoly in air travel between New York (state), New York and Florida from the 1930s until the 1950s and dominated this market for decades afterward. The Air Mail scandal, also known as the Air Mail fiasco, is the name that the American press gave to the political scandal resulting from a 1934 congressional investigation of the awarding of contracts to certain airlines to carry airmail and to the use of the U.S. Army Air Corps to fly the mail. In 1930, during the administration of President Herbert Hoover, Congress passed the Air Mail Act of 1930.
