Pray for Rain is a San Francisco, California-based music production company and recording group specialising in film soundtracks, led by St. Louis, Missouri musician Dan Wool. Past members of Pray for Rain include Gary Brown, Paul Trupin, and James Woody. Originally a performing post-punk band active in San Francisco in the 1980s and 1990s, Pray for Rain transitioned to being a soundtrack-collective after scoring the film ''Sid and Nancy''. Among their many soundtracks are the scores to several Alex Cox films, including ''Sid and Nancy'', '' Straight to Hell'', '' The Winner'', ''Death and the Compass'', and ''Three Businessmen''. Dan Wool
Dan Wool is an American composer and sound designer. Originally from St. Louis, Missouri, where he played in the punk rock band The Strikers, he is based in San Francisco, California. He has worked in New York, Los Angeles, London, Mexico City and Anhui China creating scores for broadcast television projects, theatrical sound installations and more than 45 feature films, including nine films for celebrated cult filmmaker Alex Cox. Wool has also composed music for television movies and episodic series for ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, and HBO. He is often recognized for his work as principal composer in film score soundtrack-group Pray for Rain. Wool has also worked extensively creating sound and music for international and domestic advertising and sound-branding and also as sound-designer for short films and documentaries, including several for the BBC and Channel 4 (UK). ''Sid and Nancy'' (also known as ''Sid and Nancy: Love Kills'') is a 1986 British biographical film directed by Alex Cox, co-written with Abbe Wool, and starring Gary Oldman and Chloe Webb. The film portrays the life of Sid Vicious, bassist of the punk rock band the Sex Pistols, and his destructive relationship with girlfriend Nancy Spungen. Alexander B. H. Cox (born 15 December 1954) is an English film director, screenwriter, actor, non-fiction author and broadcaster. Cox experienced success early in his career with ''Repo Man (film), Repo Man'' and ''Sid and Nancy'', but since the release and commercial failure of ''Walker (film), Walker'', his career has moved towards independent films. Cox received a co-writer credit for the screenplay of Terry Gilliam's ''Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (film), Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas'' (1998) for previous work on the script before it was rewritten by Gilliam. ''Straight to Hell'' is a 1987 independent action comedy film directed by Alex Cox and starring Sy Richardson, Joe Strummer (frontman of the Clash), Dick Rude, and Courtney Love. The film also features cameos by Dennis Hopper, Grace Jones, Elvis Costello, Edward Tudor-Pole, Kathy Burke, and Jim Jarmusch. ''The Winner'' is a 1996 film directed by Alex Cox and written by Wendy Riss based on her play ''A Darker Purpose''. Most noted for its quirky cast (Vincent D'Onofrio, Richard Edson, Michael Madsen, Billy Bob Thornton, and Frank Whaley) and art department, including production designer Cecilia Montiel. ''Death and the Compass'' is a 1992 American thriller film written and directed by Alex Cox, based on Jorge Luis Borges' 1942 short story of the same name. It stars Peter Boyle, Miguel Sandoval, and Christopher Eccleston. Mexican actress Zaide Silvia Gutiérrez also appears. The film was originally a 55-minute drama made for Spanish TV/BBC in 1992. Producer Karl Braun found further money to expand the film into a feature, but the film was not completed for four years. It was filmed on location in Mexico City. The soundtrack was composed by Dan Wool and Pray for Rain. Home media release The making of the soundtrack is discussed in a conversation between Cox and Wool on the DVD release.
