Pravda Records
Pravda Records is an American independent record label based in Chicago, Illinois, United States, representing a diverse roster of indie rock, soul, pop, and experimental artists. History Pravda Records was founded by Kenn Goodman in 1984. Pravda's first release was a five song cassette by The Service entitled ''Foma.'' In 1986, Pravda Records opened a retail store at 3730 N. Clark Street in the storefront of Metro Chicago. Until 1992, the retail store focused on imports and other independent music. Goodman closed the retail store to shift emphasis back to the label and its artists. To date, Pravda Records has over 100 releases in a variety of genres from artists such as Grammy Award-nominated Susan Voelz, Glenn Mercer of The Feelies, and late Motown legend Andre Williams. Indie Rock
Indie rock is a Music subgenre, subgenre of rock music that originated in the United States, United Kingdom and New Zealand from the 1970s to the 1980s. Originally used to describe independent record labels, the term became associated with the music they produced and was initially used interchangeably with alternative rock or "Pop rock, guitar pop rock". One of the primary scenes of the movement was Dunedin, where Dunedin sound, a cultural scene based around a convergence of noise pop and jangle became popular among the city's University of Otago, large student population. Independent labels such as Flying Nun Records, Flying Nun began to promote the scene across New Zealand, inspiring key college rock bands in the United States such as Pavement (band), Pavement, Pixies (band), Pixies and R.E.M. Legendary Stardust Cowboy
Norman Carl Odam (born September 5, 1947, in Lubbock, Texas), known professionally as the Legendary Stardust Cowboy, is an outsider performer who is considered one of the pioneers of the genre that came to be known as psychobilly in the 1960s. Early life Odam was interested in space travel from early childhood, recalling that at kindergarten age he "used to look at the moon and ell himselfthat some day man will go to the moon." As a teenager he combined his interests in outer space and the American west to create the name "Stardust Cowboy", adding the word "legendary" because "I am a legend in my own time." The fact that the initials of "Legendary Star Dust", LSD, referred to a popular drug at the time was coincidental; he claims to have adopted the name in 1961, before the drug was popularized. Lab Partners are an American shoegazing band from Dayton, Ohio. Javelin Boot was a band formed in Texas in 1978 by guitarist Dan O'Neill, bassist Blake Patterson, and drummer David Mider. Green (band)
Green is a rock music, rock group from Chicago. History The group was started by Jeff Lescher (guitar and vocals), John Diamond (bass and backing vocals), and John Valley (drums). This lineup recorded the 1984 four-song EP ''The Name of This Group Is Green'' and the group's 1986 self-titled debut album, which featured 14 songs, including re-recordings of all four songs from the earlier EP. Green established themselves via live shows around Chicago and undertook several national tours with the assistance of manager Cindy Illig. In 1986, Diamond and Valley elected to leave the band as Lescher announced plans for a national tour. Cheer-Accident is an American progressive rock ensemble headed by Thymme Jones. Jones took the name of the band from a Hallmark Cards shopping display, and first formed the group in 1981 with singer Jim Drummond and drummer Mike Greenlees. Biography Cheer-Accident's first album, ''Life Isn't Like That'', was released in 1986, after which Drummond and Greenlees left the group. They were replaced by bassist Chris Block and guitarist Jeff Libersher. The group's second release, 1988's ''Sever Roots, Tree Dies'', which was produced and engineered by the Phil Bonnet. Their 1991 album, ''Dumb Ask'', was produced by Steve Albini, and following this the group signed to British label Neat Records. The Slugs
The Slugs were an American rock band from Chicago, Illinois, United States. Starting in 1983, the band played power pop influenced by bands such as The Who, NRBQ, XTC and The Smithereens. Formation and members The Slugs was started by brothers guitarist Dag and bassist Gregg Juhlin and their friend guitarist Al Paulson in Park Ridge, Illinois. In the early 1980s, the trio put out an ad for a drummer that was answered by Chicago native Mike Halston, and the band officially formed on March 5, 1983. Al Paulson eventually left the group, and English vocalist Tristan Gallagher joined but left in 1985. In the 1990s, Johnny L (born John Lukashevich) joined the band as guitarist. Hasil Adkins (April 29, 1937 – April 26, 2005) was an American singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. His genres include rock and roll, country, blues and more commonly rockabilly, and because of his unusual playing and singing style, he is often cited as an example of outsider music. He generally performed as a one-man band, playing guitar and drums at the same time. Adkins was born during the Great Depression and grew up in poverty. His spirited, unusual lifestyle is reflected in his music. His songs, which he began recording and distributing locally in the mid-1950s, explored an affinity for chicken, sexual intercourse, and decapitation, and were obscure outside of West Virginia until the 1980s. The newfound popularity secured him a cult following, spawned the Norton Records label, and helped usher in the genre known as psychobilly. Cordell Jackson
Cordell Jackson (July 15, 1923 – October 14, 2004) was an American guitarist thought to be the first woman to produce, engineer, arrange and promote music on her own rock and roll music label. Early life She was born Cordell Miller in Pontotoc, Mississippi, where her father led a string band, the Pontotoc Ridge Runners. As a child she learned guitar, piano, and double bass, and soon began performing in her father's band and on radio in Tupelo. She married William Jackson in 1943, and settled in Memphis, Tennessee, where she joined the Fisher Air Craft Band and wrote songs. After installing recording equipment in her home, she recorded demo records for Sam Phillips before he set up Sun Records. Career Jackson founded the Moon Records label in Memphis in 1956.
