Prairie Valley High School was a public high school located in Gowrie, Iowa. It offers a curriculum for students in grades 9–12. It was a part of the Prairie Valley Community School District. Gowrie is a city in Webster County, Iowa. The population was 952 at the time of the 2020 census. The town has a swimming pool, golf course, athletic stadium, and curb-and-gutter throughout the community. History A post office called Gowrie has been in operation since 1871. The city was named after Gowrie, in Scotland. Gowrie began as a stop on the railroad. It grew in its early years as the Swedish settlers built a local economy which served area farmers. Prairie Valley Community School District was a rural public K-12 school district with a district seat in Gowrie, Iowa. The district was located in portions of Calhoun and Webster counties, as well as a small portion of Greene County. It served Gowrie, Callender, Farnhamville, Moorland, Rinard, and Somers. Additionally, the district included the unincorporated areas of Lanyon and Slifer. In 2023 the district merged into the Southeast Valley Community School District. ''The Des Moines Register'' is the daily morning newspaper of Des Moines, Iowa. History Early period The first newspaper in Des Moines was the ''Iowa Star''. In July 1849, Barlow Granger began the paper in an abandoned log cabin by the junction of the Des Moines and Raccoon River.
