Prairie Lea Independent School District
The Prairie Lea Independent School District is a public school district based in the community of Prairie Lea, Texas, United States. In addition to Prairie Lea, the district also serves the communities of Fentress and Stairtown as well as rural areas in southwestern Caldwell County and a small portion of northeastern Guadalupe County. Prairie Lea ISD has one PK-12 campus, Prairie Lea School, with an annual enrollment of between 225 and 250 students. The district accepts transfers from other districts based upon the recommendations of the district transfer committee. The district does not assess a per pupil transfer fee. On a space-available basis, the transfer committee uses an attendance and behavioral performance rubric to assist in transfer approval assessment. In addition to the locally developed rubric, the district must comply with state standards that require certain demographic balance percentages be maintained. Prairie Lea, Texas
Prairie Lea is an unincorporated community in Caldwell County, Texas, United States. According to the Handbook of Texas, the community had an estimated population of 255 in 2000. It is part of the Austin–Round Rock Metropolitan Statistical Area. History The community, Caldwell County's oldest, was built on the 1820 land grant of Joe Martin of Gonzales. Sam Houston named the town for his future wife Margaret Lea Houston. Edmund Bellinger, a veteran of the Battle of San Jacinto and Battle of Plum Creek, became Prairie Lea's first settler in 1839. Other early settlers were largely slave-holding families. Growth followed the establishment of a sawmill, gristmill, and gin by Thomas Mooney on the nearby San Marcos River. Fentress, Texas
Fentress is an unincorporated community in Caldwell County, Texas, United States. According to the Handbook of Texas, the community had an estimated population of 291 in 2000. It is part of the Austin–Round Rock Metropolitan Statistical Area. It was the setting for the novel '' The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate''. History A settlement called Riverside was founded at the site in 1869. A Cumberland Presbyterian church was established there that same year. There was a cotton gin powered by horses built in Riverside around 1870 by Cullen R. Smith and Joseph D. Smith. Nine years later, it moved to the riverfront and was converted into waterpower, and was operated by family members until its closure in 1968. Stairtown, Texas
Stairtown is an unincorporated community in Caldwell County, Texas, United States. According to the Handbook of Texas, the community had an estimated population of 35 in 2000. It is part of the Austin–Round Rock Metropolitan Statistical Area. History The community came into existence during the 1920s, just after the discovery of Edgar B. Davis' Luling oilfield. It was named after Oscar F. Stair, a local landowner. By the late 1940s, there were a few businesses and an estimated population of 20. The number of inhabitants had risen to 35 by the late 1960s and remained at that level through 2000. There were a few oil derricks and a few homes in Stairtown, but those alone dictated that there was little need for a workforce in the community due to its proximity to Luling. According to Oscar F. Caldwell County is a county located in the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2020 census, its population was 45,883. Its county seat is Lockhart. The county was founded in 1848 and named after Mathew Caldwell, a ranger captain who fought in the Battle of Plum Creek against the Comanches and against Santa Anna's armies during the Texas Revolution. Guadalupe County (, ) is a county located in the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2020 census, its population was 172,706. The county seat is Seguin. Six-man football is a variant of gridiron football played with six players per team, instead of the standard 11 or 12. It is generally played by high schools in rural areas of the United States and Canada. History Six-man football was developed in 1934 by Stephen Epler in Chester, Nebraska, as an alternative means for small high schools to field a football team during the Great Depression. The first game was played on Thursday, September 27, 1934, at the Hebron, Nebraska Athletic Gridiron, under the lights, with a crowd of almost 1000 watching. This game was played so that coaches all over Kansas and Nebraska could see if they wanted to try this new game of six-man.
