''Prachatai'' ( th, ประชาไท, ''Free People'') is an independent non-profit online newspaper in Thailand. Focusing on news from and commentary on NGOs, social movements, and human rights issues, the website became an alternative source for social and political news in a country where many media outlets are state backed, including military-run, or for-profit. Its current editor-in-chief is Tewarit Maneechay, with Pongpan Chumjai serving as general manager. The site publishes mainly in the Thai language, with selected articles in English. History and objectives The newspaper was established in June 2004 by a group of concerned Thais who included a senior member of the Press Council of Thailand, a well-known lecturer in journalism, two members of the Thai Senate, a number of senior journalists, and a number of Thai NGO leaders. Somsak Jeamteerasakul
Somsak Jeamteerasakul (; ) is a former history lecturer at the Faculty of Liberal Arts, Thammasat University. His academic field is contemporary political history, especially recent Thai history from 1930. He is a critic of Thailand's monarchy and its lèse majesté law. He has lived in self-imposed exile in France since the 2014 Thai coup d'état, following violent attacks and lèse majesté charges. Background Somsak Jeamteerasakul was born on 22 June 1958. He graduated from secondary school at Suankularb Wittayalai School and Thammasat University. Somsak has been interested in politics since he was a student representative during his secondary education. Tiwagorn Withiton
Tiwagorn Withiton ( th, ทิวากร วิถีตน; ; born 31 October 1975) is a Thai political and human rights activist, farmer and engineer. He is one of the first political activists in Thailand that openly challenge the country's taboo, harsh punishment by the Monarchy defamation law, by publishing his photo of him wearing a printed 'I lost faith in the Monarchy' T-shirt. He has encouraged people to wear it because it stated a sentiment, not defamation. It went viral on social media, but later, Internal Security Operations Command took him to Psychiatric Hospital. It is one of the causes to start the 2020–2021 Thai protests' second wave protests, the largest demonstration since the 2014 Thai coup d'état, demanding him out of forcibly hospitalized. Surachai Danwattananusorn ( th, สุรชัย ด่านวัฒนานุสรณ์; born 24 December 1942, disappeared 10 December 2018) is a Thai political activist and former political prisoner. He was the last communist to be pardoned in Thailand, and after his release he entered mainstream politics, becoming a committee member of the Thai Rak Thai Party and founding the Red Siam political movement. Surachai is known for his anti-monarchist views, which have resulted in a past arrest under Thailand's lèse majesté laws. Surachai has been in exile in neighbouring Laos since the Thai military coup of 2014. He disappeared after the murder of two other anti-monarchist activists in December 2018. Faiyen () is a Thai political hybrid band of pop and modern luk thung, republican and human-rights activist group, and podcaster. The group emerged as a band that produced satirical songs of Thai monarchy in 2011, after red shirts' protests were suppressed by the Thai army, allegedly supported by the monarchy.
