David Powel
David Powel (1549/52 – 1598) was a Welsh Church of England clergyman and historian who published the first printed history of Wales in 1584. Life Powel was born in Denbighshire and commenced his studies at the University of Oxford when he was 16, sometime between 1566 and 1568. Whilst his initial college membership is not known, it is known that he moved to Jesus College when it was founded in 1571. He obtained his B.A. degree on 3 March 1573 and is thought to have been the college's first graduate. He obtained his M.A. on 6 July 1576. Before Powel graduated, he had been named as vicar of Ruabon, Denbighshire and rector of Llanfyllin, Montgomeryshire. He became vicar of Meifod in place of his Llanfyllin position in 1579, and was also the holder of two prebends at St Asaph Cathedral. Samuel Powel
Samuel Powel (October 28, 1738 – September 29, 1793) was a colonial and post-revolutionary mayor of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Since Philadelphia's mayoral office had been abolished early in the revolutionary period, Powel was the last colonial mayor of the city and the first to serve after the United States gained independence from Great Britain. He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and graduated in 1759 from the College of Philadelphia (now the University of Pennsylvania). He served as mayor from 1775 to 1776 and 1789 to 1790, the office having been abolished under the Pennsylvania Constitution of 1776. He was a member of the Pennsylvania State Senate from 1790 to his death in 1793. Powel was an early member of the American Philosophical Society and a trustee of the College of Philadelphia (now the University of Pennsylvania). William Garrigues Powel
William Garrigues Powel (November 17, 1852 – May 22, 1894) was an American politician from Pennsylvania who served as a Republican member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives for Delaware County from 1883 to 1884. Early life and education Powel was born in Delaware County, Pennsylvania to Thomas P. and Lydia (Garrigues) Powel. He attended the Saunders Academy and Maplewood Institute. Career Powel worked in the iron hardware and coach material business for D.H. Kent and Co. in Wilmington, Delaware and as a farmer. Powel served for years as secretary and treasurer of the Republican Executive Committee of Delaware County and as chairman in 1880. In 1882, he was elected to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives for Delaware County defeating Nathan Garrett. He served one term and was succeeded by John Buchanan Robinson in 1884. Powel Crosley Jr
Powel Crosley Jr. (September 18, 1886 – March 28, 1961) was an American inventor, industrialist, and entrepreneur. He was also a pioneer in radio broadcasting, and owner of the Cincinnati Reds major league baseball team. In addition, Crosley's companies manufactured Crosley automobiles and radios, and operated WLW radio station. Crosley, once dubbed "The Henry Ford of Radio," was inducted into the Automotive Hall of Fame in 2010 and the National Radio Hall of Fame in 2013. He and his brother, Lewis M. Crosley, were responsible for many firsts in consumer products and broadcasting. During World War II, Crosley's facilities produced more proximity fuzes than any other U.S. manufacturer, and made several production design innovations.
