Potteries Electric Traction Company
The Potteries Electric Traction Company operated a tramway service in The Potteries between 1899 and 1928. History British Electric Traction incorporated a new company on 27 June 1898, called the Potteries Electric Traction Company. Its purpose was to extend the existing tramway through the towns of the Potteries. In payment of £152,410 to British Electric Traction the Potteries Electric Traction Company acquired four separate companies: *North Staffordshire Tramways Company Limited - 6¾ route miles *Longton Corporation Tramways - 1½ route miles *Potteries Extension Tramways - 12 route miles *Potteries Light Railways - 12 route miles The contract for construction of 28 miles of permanent way was awarded to Dick, Kerr & Co. and the overhead work was awarded to R. The Staffordshire Potteries is the industrial area encompassing the six towns Burslem, Fenton, Hanley, Longton, Stoke and Tunstall, which is now the city of Stoke-on-Trent in Staffordshire, England. North Staffordshire
The federation of Stoke-on-Trent was the 1910 amalgamation of the six Staffordshire Potteries towns of Burslem, Tunstall, Stoke-upon-Trent, Hanley, Fenton and Longton into the single county borough of Stoke-on-Trent. An anomaly in the history of English local government, this was the first union of its type and the only such event to take place until the 1960s. The 1910 federation was the culmination of a process of urban growth and municipal change that started in the early 19th century. North Staffordshire Tramways Company
The North Staffordshire Tramways operated a steam tramway service from 1881 to 1898 in the Staffordshire Potteries area. History The North Staffordshire Tramways Company Limited was formed on 4 December 1878. The ''Stoke-on-Trent, Fenton, Longton and District Tramways Order'' of 1879 was sanctioned by the Tramways Order Confirmation Act of 11 August 1879 to build four routes of tramway. The company acquired the assets of the Staffordshire Potteries Street Railway Company on 2 March 1880 and continued to operate it between Hanley and Burslem until it rebuilt it in 1882. The North Staffordshire Tramways Order of 1880 sanctioned the building of five additional routes. Dick, Kerr & Co
Dick, Kerr and Company was a locomotive and tramcar manufacturer based in Kilmarnock, Scotland and Preston, England. Early history W.B. Dick and Company was founded in 1854 in Glasgow by William Bruce Dick. The company were initially oil refiners and manufacturers of paint used for coating the bottom of ships. They had depots and works in Glasgow, Liverpool, Newcastle, Barrow-in-Furness, Cardiff and Hamburg by 1890. Brush Traction is a manufacturer and maintainer of railway locomotives in Loughborough, England. It is a subsidiary of Wabtec. The United Electric Car Company was a tramcar manufacturer from 1905 to 1917 in Preston, Lancashire, England. History The Electric Railway and Tramway Carriage Works was formed in 1897 registered on 25 April 1898 to acquire works at Preston, Lancashire. It was founded by two Scots, W. B. Dick and John Kerr. They formed a new company, English Electrical Manufacturing based in a new West Works on Strand Road, Preston in 1900, to build the electric motors for their trams. In 1905 the Electric Railway and Tramway Carriage Works took over two other works, including G.F. Milnes & Co. in Hadley, Shropshire, the name being then changed to United Electric Car Co. Sheffield Tramway was an extensive tramway network serving the English city of Sheffield and its suburbs. The first tramway line, horse-drawn, opened in 1873 between Lady's Bridge and Attercliffe, subsequently extended to Brightside and Tinsley.
