Cerro Rico
Cerro Rico (Spanish for "Rich Mountain"), Cerro Potosí ("Potosí Mountain") or Sumaq Urqu (Quechuan languages, Quechua ''sumaq'' "beautiful, good, pleasant", ''urqu'' "mountain", "beautiful (good or pleasant) mountain"), is a mountain in the Andes near the Bolivian city of Potosí. Cerro Rico, which is popularly conceived of as being "made of" silver ore, is famous for providing vast quantities of silver for the Spanish Empire, most of which was shipped to metropolitan Spain. It is estimated that eighty-five percent of the silver produced in the central Andes during this time came from Cerro Rico. As a result of mining operations in the mountain, the city of Potosí became one of the largest cities in the New World. Potosí Mountain Range
The Potosí mountain range in Bolivia is situated east and southeast of the city of Potosí. It is at least 25 km long stretching from north to south. Its highest mountain is Khunurana (Anaruyu) rising up to 5,071 m (16,637 ft). The features of the range are considered the product of volcanic activity known as the Khari Khari caldera (19º43'S; 65º38'W). The caldera is about 40 km long and 25 km at its widest point. The range was named ''Cordillera de Potosí'' by the German alpinist Henry Hoek in 1903. He collected information about the range like the local names and published several papers about it. The inhabitants of the area, however, use the names Khari Khari for the northern part and Anta Q'awa for the southern one. The two sections are separated by a depression, the Jach'a Molino Pampa. Huayna Potosí
Huayna Potosí is a mountain in Bolivia, located near El Alto and about 25 km north of La Paz in the Cordillera Real. Huayna Potosí is the closest high mountain to La Paz. Surrounded by high mountains, it is roughly 15 miles due north of the city, which makes this mountain the most popular climb in Bolivia. The normal ascent route is a fairly straightforward glacier climb, with some crevasses and a steep climb to the summit. However, the other side of the mountain—Huayna Potosí West Face—is the biggest face in Bolivia. Several difficult snow and ice routes ascend this 1000 meter high face. The first ascent of the normal route was undertaken in 1919 by Germans Rudolf Dienst and Adolf Schulze. Some climbing books report this mountain as the "easiest 6000er in the world", but this claim is debatable. Potosi Mountain (Nevada)
Potosi Mountain is about southwest of Las Vegas in the Spring Mountains of Clark County, southern Nevada. It is also called Double Up Mountain and Olcott Peak. Its main bedrock is limestone. History The giant cave of Potosi Mountain was used for vision quests by the Chemehuevi shaman of the mid-19th century, ɁOomposi. Spanish missionaries may have opened silver mines here, but there is no good documentation of that. In 1855, Mormon settlers found rich lead and other metal ore. The Mormon mine manager probably named the mine after his childhood home, Potosi, Wisconsin, another mining town, itself named (directly or indirectly) after the Bolivian mountain ''Cerro Potosí'', the richest silver mine known. The Potosi Mining District on the west of the mountain produced lead and silver. Wayna Potosí (Oruro)
Wayna Potosí (Aymara and Quechua ''wayna'' young, Hispanicized spelling ''Huayna Potosí'') is a mountain in the Andes of Bolivia, about 4,969 metres (16,302 ft) high. It is located in the Oruro Department, Sajama Province, Turku Municipality, Turku Canton, northwest of Turku (Turco). The Turku River originates near the mountain.
