Potamogeton Tepperi
''Potamogeton tepperi'' is a water herb, belonging to the Potamogetonaceae family in the order Alismatales. Taxonomy The species was first described in 1887 by the British botanist, Arthur Bennett, from a specimen collected by Frederick Manson Bailey from a pool 500 miles north of Brisbane, and another collected from a river in South Australia by Johann Gottlieb Otto Tepper (who is honoured in the species epithet). Description It is an aquatic, rhizomatous perennial herb which has both submerged and floating leaves. The stems are terete and up to 3 m long. Stipules convolute, free from the base of leaf blade. Both submerged leaves and floating leaves are petiolate with lanceolate blades. The Inflorescence is a terminal spike up to 5 cm long which emerges above the water. The Potamogetonaceae, commonly referred to as the pondweed family, is an aquatic family of monocotyledonous flowering plants. The roughly 110 known species are divided over six genera. The largest genus in the family by far is ''Potamogeton'', which contains about 100 species. The family has a subcosmopolitan distribution, and is considered to be one of the most important angiosperm groups in the aquatic environment because of its use as food and habitat for aquatic animals.Haynes, R. Alismatales
The Alismatales (alismatids) are an order of flowering plants including about 4,500 species. Plants assigned to this order are mostly tropical or aquatic. Some grow in fresh water, some in marine habitats. Description The Alismatales comprise herbaceous flowering plants of often aquatic and marshy habitats, and the only monocots known to have green embryos other than the Amaryllidaceae. They also include the only marine angiosperms growing completely submerged, the seagrasses. The flowers are usually arranged in inflorescences, and the mature seeds lack endosperm. Both marine and freshwater forms include those with staminate flowers that detach from the parent plant and float to the surface. Frederick Manson Bailey
Frederick Manson Bailey (8 March 1827 – 25 June 1915) was a botanist active in Australia, who made valuable contributions to the characterisation of the flora of Queensland. He was known by his middle name, Manson. Early life Bailey was born in London, the second son of John Bailey (botanist), John Bailey (horticulturist and first Colonial Botanist of South Australia) and his wife, ''née'' Manson. Frederick was educated at the foundation school of the Independent Church at Hackney, London. The family went to Australia in 1838 arriving at Adelaide on 22 March 1839 in the ''Buckinghamshire''. John Bailey was appointed colonial botanist soon afterwards and was asked to form a botanic garden. John Bailey resigned in 1841, began farming, and subsequently started a plant nursery at Adelaide. ''Potamogeton'' is a genus of aquatic, mostly freshwater, plants of the family Potamogetonaceae. Most are known by the common name pondweed, although many unrelated plants may be called pondweed, such as Canadian pondweed (''Elodea canadensis''). The genus name means "river neighbor", originating from the Greek ''potamos'' (river) and ''geiton'' (neighbor). Morphology ''Potamogeton'' species range from large (stems of 6 m or more) to very small (less than 10 cm). Height is strongly influenced by environmental conditions, particularly water depth.
