Posti (1950 Film)
''Posti'' is a 1950 Indian Punjabi-language film and the first production of Kwatra Production (of Sardul Singh Kwatra and Harcharan Singh Kwatra), directed by K. D. Mehra (Krishan Dev Mehra), starring Majnu and Shyama in the lead roles. Shyama was the principal female actress of this movie. It did well at the box office in the Punjab and Delhi areas. Noted playback singer, Asha Bhosle, made her debut with the film. Music The music, composed by Sardul Singh Kwatra, played a major role in the film's success. Sardul modified the folk tunes of Punjab and the songs were hits. Asha Bhosle, Mohammad Rafi, Shamshad Begum, Rajkumari and Jagjit Kaur were the playback singers. Rajkumari first sang for a Punjabi Kurhmai in 1941, but in the film ''Posti'', her songs became real hits. Shyama (Hindi Actress)
Shyama (born Khurshid Akhtar; 7 June 1935 – 14 November 2017) was an Indian actress who appeared in Hindi films. She was active between 1945 and 1989. She is best known for her roles in ''Aar Paar'' (1954 film) and '' Barsaat Ki Raat'' (1960 film). Career Born as Khurshid Akhtar in Lahore, Punjab in British India on 7 June 1935 into a Muslim family, Shyama moved to MUmbai from Lahore in the 1940s. As a young girl, she acted in a few films such as Noor Jehan's husband Shaukat Hussain Rizvi's Zeenat (1945 film) and ''Meerabai'' (1947). She worked with Shammi Kapoor in romantic classic Mirza Sahiban (1957). Director Vijay Bhatt gave her the stage name Shyama, by which she is credited in her movies. She had starring roles in Guru Dutt's classic ''Aar Paar'' (1954 film), and later in '' Barsaat Ki Raat'' (1960 film), which was perhaps her best performance. Jagjit Kaur
Jagjit Kaur (May 1930 – 15 August 2021) was an Indian Hindi/Urdu singer and was married to the music director, Mohammed Zahur Khayyam. Personal life and death Kaur belonged to an aristocratic family from Punjab. She married composer Mohammed Zahur Khayyam in 1954, one of the first inter-communal marriages in the Indian film industry. They had a son, Pradeep, who died of a heart attack in 2012. Inspired by their son's helping nature, they started a trust, "Khayyam Jagjit Kaur KPG Charitable Trust" to help artistes and technicians in need. Khayyam died on 19 August 2019 following a cardiac arrest at the age of 92. Kaur died on 15 August 2021 at the age of 91. ''Do Lachhian'' ( pa, ਦੋ ਲੱਛੀਆਂ) is a 1960 (sometimes written 1959) Punjabi film directed by Jugal Kishore, starring Gopal Sehgal, Daljeet, Indira Billi and Krishna Kumari in lead roles. Synopsis ''Do Lachhian'' is a romantic drama. Two girls, Lachhi (waddhi Lachhi) and Chhoti Lachhi, the daughters of Dharmu and Karmu, respectively, are in love with Labbhu and Sohna, respectively. Labbhu and his friend Natthu are alcoholic thieves and have a little crime record. A moneylender, Bhainge Shah, also wants to marry Chhoti Lachhi, and for this purpose he manages a fight between Dharmu and Karmu and so between Lachhi and Chhoti Lachhi with the help of Labbhu and Natthu. Lachhi ( pa, ਲੱਛੀ) is a 1949 Punjabi film. The film was a big hit. Hansraj Behl composed the music and Mulk Raj Bhakhri penned the lyrics. Mohammad Rafi, Lata Mangeshkar and Shamshad Begum,S.Balbir are the lead playback singers. ''Bhangra'' ( pa, ਭੰਗੜਾ) is a 1959 Punjabi romance, comedy and drama film directed by Jugal Kishore, starring Sunder, Nishi and Manju in lead roles. Synopsis Sunder, the son of moneylender Kaude Shah, goes to a poor farmer, Bulaki, in the village of Rangpur to get money owed, but falls in love with his daughter Banto. A suspended ''Munshi'' (Cashier/Assistant of a money-lender) of Kaude Shah, Mehnga Mall, also tries to get Banto; he steals Kaude Shah's jewellery and reaches Rangpur. He gives the jewellery to Sunder for staying away from him and Banto. Sunder gives the jewellery to Bulaki to pay back his debt and so did the unconscious Bulaki. The truth comes out and Bulaki is charged for stealing jewellery. He explains that the jewellery was given to him by Sunder and so Sunder is arrested. Shamshad Begum
Shamshad Begum (Hindi: शमशाद बेगम, IAST: ''Śamśād Bēgam''; 14 April 1919 – 23 April 2013) was an Indian singer who was one of the first playback singers in the Hindi film industry. Notable for her distinctive voice and range, she sang over 6,000 songs in Hindustani, Bengali, Marathi, Gujarati, Tamil, and Punjabi languages, among which 1287 were Hindi film songs. She worked with renowned composers of the time, such as Naushad Ali and O. P. Nayyar, for whom she was one of their favorites. Sardul Singh Kwatra was an Indian film director and music composer. He composed music for Hindi and Punjabi films. Early life Kwatra was born in 1928 to a Sikh family in Lahore in British Punjab. He was very fond of music since his childhood. During his school days he got his initial training in classical music from Sardar Avtar Singh of Lahore. Later joined popular music director Hansraj Behl as an assistant. Career After partition, Kwatra's family moved to Amritsar and then to Bombay. Mohammad Rafi
Mohammed Rafi (24 December 1924 – 31 July 1980) was an Indian playback singer and musician. He is considered to have been one of the greatest and most influential singers of the Indian subcontinent. Rafi was notable for his versatility and range of voice; his songs varied from fast peppy numbers to patriotic songs, sad numbers to highly romantic songs, qawwalis to ghazals and bhajans to classical songs.
