''Postcards from Ireland'' is the fourteenth studio album released by the group Celtic Woman. Background On 20 April 2021, Celtic Woman announced the ''Postcards from Ireland'' tour, with Cork-born singer Muirgen O'Mahony replacing former member Mairéad Carlin who left the group in January 2021 to pursue solo projects. On 10 September, " The Dawning of the Day" was released as the first single from the album, accompanied by a lyric video. On 8 October, " Mise Éire" was released as the second single from the album, also with a lyric video. The album was released on 29 October, and an accompanying music video for "Wild Mountain Thyme" was released on the same day. Celtic Woman
Celtic Woman is an all-female Irish musical ensemble conceived and created by David Kavanagh, Sharon Browne and David Downes, a former musical director of the Irish stage show ''Riverdance.'' In 2004, Downes recruited five Irish female musicians who had not previously performed together, vocalists Chloë Agnew, Órla Fallon, Lisa Kelly and Méav Ní Mhaolchatha, and fiddler Máiréad Nesbitt, as the first lineup of the group that he named "Celtic Woman". Downes chose a repertoire that ranged from traditional Celtic tunes to modern songs. The show was meant to be a one-time event held in Dublin, Ireland, but multiple airings on PBS helped boost the group's popularity. The group's line-up has changed over the years. Megan Walsh (singer)
Megan Ruby Walsh (born 19 February 1997) is an Irish singer who joined the singing group Celtic Woman in 2018. Biography Early life and education Megan Ruby Walsh was born on 19 February 1997. Her middle name "Ruby" comes from her maternal grandparents. She lived her very early years in Trim, County Meath, in Ireland. Her family were involved in musical theatre; she started appearing in local shows in Trim from age 4. When she was six, her family moved to Navan, but she remained at schools in Trim until age 14, initially at St Mary's Primary School and subsequently Scoil Mhuire. She completed her final years of high school at Loreto Secondary School, St. Michael's in Navan. She studied with the Royal Irish Academy of Music conservatory from age 10 to age 17, and received multiple certifications. The plot takes place in May in Oranmore. The narrator sees a girl wearing a bonnet with ribbons and a Galway shawl around her shoulders. He and the girl go to her father's cottage. The girl tells him to play " The Foggy Dew" to please her father. The man plays some hornpipes and the girl sings them as she cries tears of joy. The song ends as the narrator bids the girl farewell as he's bound for County Donegal. "Sheep may safely graze" (german: Schafe können sicher weiden, link=no) is a soprano aria by Johann Sebastian Bach to words by Salomon Franck. The piece was written in 1713 and is part of the cantata , BWV 208 (''Only the lively hunt pleases me''), also known as the ''Hunting Cantata''. Like the Bach's "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring", "Sheep may safely graze" is frequently played at weddings. However, the cantata BWV 208 was originally written for a birthday celebration of Christian, Duke of Saxe-Weissenfels. Bach was based at the nearby court of Weimar, and musicians from both courts appear to have joined in the first performance in Weißenfels. Bach is known to have used the music again for other celebrations, but it remained unpublished until after his death. "Down by the Salley Gardens" (''Irish: Gort na Saileán'') is a poem by William Butler Yeats published in ''The Wanderings of Oisin and Other Poems'' in 1889. History Yeats indicated in a note that it was "an attempt to reconstruct an old song from three lines imperfectly remembered by an old peasant woman in the village of Ballisodare, Sligo, who often sings them to herself." The "old song" may have been the ballad ''The Rambling Boys of Pleasure'' which contains the following verse: :"Down by yon flowery garden my love and I we first did meet. :I took her in my arms and to her I gave kisses sweet :She bade me take life easy just as the leaves fall from the tree. :But I being young and foolish, with my darling did not agree." The similarity to the first verse of the Yeats version is unmistakable and would suggest that this was indeed the song Yeats remembered the old woman singing. "Bonny Portmore" is an Irish traditional folk song which laments the demise of Ireland's old oak forests, specifically the Great Oak of Portmore or the Portmore Ornament Tree, which fell in a windstorm in 1760 and was subsequently used for shipbuilding and other purposes. Background In 1664 an extensive castle was erected at Portmore, near Portmore Lough, County Antrim by Lord Conway, on the site of a more ancient fortress. It contained accommodation for two troops of horse. The site fell into neglect after Conway's death in 1683, and the buildings removed around 1760. The old oak is believed to have stood on the estate of Portmore Castle. The melody of this song was first published 1840 in Edward Bunting's ''Ancient Music of Ireland'' and was collected from the playing of Ulster harper Daniel Black in 1796. Susan McFadden (born 8 February 1983) is an Irish actress and singer. She is best known for playing the roles of Sandy in '' Grease'' and Elle Woods in '' Legally Blonde the Musical'' in London's West End and being a member of Celtic Woman from 2012 to 2018.
