Postal history is the study of postal systems and how they operate and, or, the study of the use of postage stamps and covers and associated postal artifacts illustrating historical episodes in the development of postal systems. Mount Athos
Mount Athos (; el, Ἄθως, ) is a mountain in the distal part of the eponymous Athos peninsula and site of an important centre of Eastern Orthodox monasticism in northeastern Greece. The mountain along with the respective part of the peninsula have been governed as the monastic community of Mount Athos, an autonomous region within the Hellenic Republic, ecclesiastically under the direct jurisdiction of the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople, while the remainder of the peninsula forms part of the Aristotelis municipality. Mount Athos has been inhabited since ancient times and is known for its long Christian presence and historical monastic traditions, which date back to at least AD 800 and the Byzantine era. Karyes, Mount Athos
Karyes ( el, Καρυές) is a settlement in Mount Athos of the Monastic community of Mount Athos, Athonite monastic community. The 2011 Greek census reported a population of 163 inhabitants. It is the largest settlement in Mount Athos. The major church at Karyes is the ''Protaton'', which is the church of the Protos (monastic office), Protos, or president of the monastic community. The famed Axion Estin icon is kept at the ''Protaton''. Each of the twenty monasteries of Mount Athos also has a ''konaki'', or representative's residence, at Karyes. Koutloumousiou Monastery is located just a few hundred meters to the south of the town center of Karyes. Dafni, Mount Athos
Dafni ( el, Δάφνη) is a small settlement on Mount Athos. It is located on the southern coast of the Athonite peninsula between Xeropotamou Monastery and Simonopetra Monastery. It is used mainly as a port and an entry point to the Athonite monastic state, with daily ferries from the town of Ouranoupoli, Chalkidiki. HMS Ark Royal (1914)
HMS ''Ark Royal'' was the first ship designed and built as a seaplane carrier. She was purchased by the Royal Navy in 1914 shortly after her keel had been laid and the ship was only in frames; this allowed the ship's design to be modified almost totally to accommodate seaplanes. During the First World War, ''Ark Royal'' participated in the Gallipoli Campaign in early 1915, with her aircraft conducting aerial reconnaissance and observation missions. Her aircraft later supported British troops on the Macedonian Front in 1916, before she returned to the Dardanelles to act as a depot ship for all the seaplanes operating in the area. In January 1918, several of her aircraft unsuccessfully attacked the German battlecruiser when she sortied from the Dardanelles to attack Allied ships in the area. Greece's first postal service was founded in 1828, at the time of Greek independence from the Ottoman Empire. This initial service continued mail delivery and, later, the issuing of postage stamps until 1970. It was then succeeded by the Hellenic Post S.A. (abbreviated ΕΛΤΑ), which remains Greece's official postal provider.
