Possession Island is the largest of the Penguin Islands, a scattered group of islands to the south of Namibia. It is the largest among the country's coastal islands, with an area of , and is located away from the Diamond Coast and to the south of Lテシderitz, on Lテシderitz Bay. It features arid and rocky ground, with occasional shrubbery and low vegetation where some species of bird nest, the African penguin among them. In the 1950s, the island had the largest population of African penguins in Namibia, with around 46,000 adults; however by 2001, only 2,000 remained. In 2008, a report published by WWF South Africa estimated around 1,400 penguins remained, with a continued decline of around 8% a year being observed in their numbers. Possession Island (Kalaw Lagaw Ya: or ) is a small island in the Torres Strait Islands group off the coast of far northern Queensland, Australia. It is inhabited by a group of Torres Strait Islanders, the Kaurareg, though the Ankamuti were also indigenous to the island. Possession Island is included in Possession Island National Park, an area of which includes Eborac Island. The park was established as a Protected Area in 1977 and managed by the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service. The Possession Islands are a group of small islands and Rock (geology), rocks extending over an area of about , lying in the western part of the Ross Sea, lying south-east of Cape McCormick and east of Cape Roget, in Victoria Land, Antarctica. The Possession Islands were named by Captain James Clark Ross, Royal Navy, in commemoration of the planting of the British flag here on January 12, 1841. テ四e de la Possession, or Possession Island, formerly テ四e de la Prise de Possession, is part of the Subantarctic Crozet Archipelago. Administratively, it is part of the French Southern and Antarctic Lands. It is an important nesting site for seabirds. Description テ四e de la Possession lies in the eastern group of the archipelago, about 20 km west of テ四e de l'Est (East Island). With an area of it is the largest island of the group and the only inhabited one. It has a rugged landscape of mountains cut by deep glaciated valleys. The coastal areas and valleys are covered with herbaceous subantarctic vegetation.
