Positive Force (band)
Positive Force DC is an activist organization founded in 1985 by members of the punk community in Washington, D.C. It has organized hundreds of benefit concerts for community and activist groups, and worked alongside Fugazi, Bikini Kill, Nation of Ulysses, Girls Against Boys, Q and Not U and other bands arising from the capital’s punk scene. Positive Force has also engaged in many other forms of progressive activism in the D.C. area, and from about 1985 to the mid-1990s there was a Positive Force house in Arlington, Virginia, where various members of the group lived and which the organization operated from. Founding The original Positive Force group started in 1984 in Reno, Nevada, with people in and around the band 7 Seconds. Several members of Reno Positive Force moved to Las Vegas and started a chapter there later that year. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) is a nonprofit organization founded in 1920 "to defend and preserve the individual rights and liberties guaranteed to every person in this country by the Constitution and laws of the United States". Counterpoint LLC was a publishing company distributed by Perseus Books Group launched in 2007. It was formed from the consolidation of three presses: Perseus' Counterpoint Press, Avalon Publishing Group's Shoemaker & Hoard and the independent Soft Skull Press. The company published books under the Counterpoint Press and Soft Skull Press imprints. Counterpoint also entered into an agreement for the production, marketing and distribution of approximately eight Sierra Club book titles each year. Brian MacKenzie Infoshop
The Brian MacKenzie Infoshop was a self-managed social center located at 1426 Ninth St., in the Shaw neighborhood of Washington, D.C. The volunteer-run anarchist co-operative ran the basement infoshop from May 2003 until December 2008. For the first four years, it was open every day to sell books and records. It also served as a community center, hangout, and meeting place for local radicals. Events included talks by Ward Churchill, Mattilda Bernstein Sycamore, Nate Powell and Josh MacPhee. The infoshop shared a building with offices for the Gray Panthers, Emmaus, the InterFaith Conference of Metropolitan Washington and a Catholic Worker bookshop. Its lease was co-signed by Ian MacKaye of Fugazi and it was named for an American University student active in the radical community who died of a heart seizure at a D.C. hardcore show at the Wilson Center in 1999.
