Portuguese Golden Ball
The Portuguese Golden Ball (known in Portuguese as ''A Bola de Ouro'') is an annual award given, by Portuguese newspaper ''A Bola'', to the player who is adjudged to have been the best of the year in the Primeira Liga. The first winner of the award was Eusébio, in 1991. Initially, it was a career award, but since then, the award was given to the best player in the league. Format The prize is given out by Portuguese newspaper ''A Bola'' to the best player in the Portuguese Liga. Winners The award has been presented on 20 occasions as of 2012, with 17 different winners. Domingos Paciência
Domingos José Paciência Oliveira, known simply as Domingos as a player (; born 2 January 1969), is a Portuguese former footballer who played as a striker, currently a manager. He achieved success with both Porto and the Portugal national team, appearing in more than 350 official matches with the former over 12 seasons (nearly 150 goals) and representing the latter at Euro 1996. After completing his accreditation in 2005, Domingos resumed his career as a manager, notably helping Braga reach the 2011 Europa League final. The 2002–03 Primeira Liga was the 69th edition of top flight of Portuguese football. It started on 25 August 2002 with a match between Varzim and Paços de Ferreira, and ended on 1 June 2003. The league was contested by 18 clubs with Boavista as the defending champions. Sporting CP won the league and qualified for the 2002–03 UEFA Champions League third qualifying round, along with Boavista, who qualified for the second round. The 2000–01 Primeira Liga was the 67th edition of the top flight of Portuguese football. It started on 19 August 2000 with a match between Braga and Vitória de Guimarães, and ended on 27 May 2001. The league was contested by 18 clubs, with Sporting CP as the defending champions. Boavista won their first league title, becoming only the second champions from outside the Portuguese "Big Three" (''Os Três Grandes'') of Benfica, Porto and Sporting, after Belenenses in the 1945–46 season. In the sport of association football, a defender is an outfield position whose primary role is to stop attacks during the game and prevent the opposition from scoring. Centre-backs are usually positioned in pairs, with one full-back on either side to their left and right, but can be played in threes with or without full-backs. Jorge Paulo Costa Almeida (born 14 October 1971) is a Portuguese retired footballer who played as a central defender, currently manager of Académico de Viseu.
