Portugal Men's National Handball Team
The Portuguese men's national handball team is governed by the Portuguese Handball Federation and competes in international competitions such as the European Men's Handball Championship and the IHF World Men's Handball Championship. They have participated four times in the World Championship (1997, 2001, 2003, 2021), reaching an all-time best tenth place in 2021, and seven times in the European Championship (1994, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2020, 2022), with a sixth place in 2020 as their best placing. They participated for the first time in the men's Olympic handball tournament at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, finishing in ninth place. Handball at the 1984 Summer Olympics featured competition for men and women. Due to the USSR-led boycott some strong handball nations from Eastern Bloc did not compete; this gave an opportunity to the Yugoslav team to take both gold medals. Games were played at Titan Gym in Fullerton, California. The 1938 World Men's Handball Championship was the first ever handball World Championship. It was played in Germany on 5 and 6 February 1938. The men's handball tournament at the 2012 Olympic Games in London was held from 28 July to 12 August at the Olympic Park. The group stage matches were held at the Copper Box and the knockout rounds took place at the larger Basketball Arena. Twelve nations were represented in the tournament. The four best teams from each group advanced to a quarter-final round, while the 5th and 6th teams in each group were classified 9th–12th by the results of their group matches.
