Portsmouth Lillies
The Portsmouth Lillies minor league baseball team played in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, for part of one season in 1888. The Lillies replaced a team from Portland, Maine, on July 20, 1888. They played in the New England League, which was a group of minor league baseball teams from 1886 to 1949. The Lillies were managed to a record of 12 wins and 20 losses by Frank Leonard Frank E. Leonard (January 2, 1896 – August 1, 1970), better known as Lank Leonard, was an American cartoonist artist who created the long-running comic strip '' Mickey Finn'', which he drew for more than three decades. Portsmouth is a city in Rockingham County, New Hampshire, United States. At the 2020 census it had a population of 21,956. A historic seaport and popular summer tourist destination on the Piscataqua River bordering the state of Maine, Portsmouth was formerly the home of the Strategic Air Command's Pease Air Force Base, since converted to Portsmouth International Airport at Pease. The New England League was a mid-level league in American minor league baseball that played intermittently in five of the six New England states (Vermont excepted) between 1886 and 1949. After 1901, it existed in the shadow of two Major League Baseball clubs in Boston and alongside stronger, higher-classification leagues. In 1946, the NEL, the International League and the Canadian–American League – which all included farm teams of the Brooklyn Dodgers – were the first 20th century leagues (other than the Negro leagues) to permit African-Americans to play. Frank Leonard (baseball)
Frank J. Leonard was a longtime minor league baseball manager, with a career lasting from 1887 to 1913. He first managed the Manchester Farmers of the New England League in 1887. In 1888, he led the New England League's Portsmouth Lillies. He next managed the New England League's Portland team in 1891, the Lewiston-Auburn Gazettes in 1892 and then the League's Dover team in 1893. In 1894, he managed the Pawtucket Maroons of the New England League. In 1895, he led the Salem/Haverhill team in the New England Association as well as the Portland team in the New England League (which he managed until 1896). In 1898, he managed the Taunton Herrings.
