Birth and origin

Pieter Pourbus was born in Gouda, South Holland, Gouda in 1523 or 1524. He moved to Bruges at the age of 20. Very little is known of his childhood and youth while living in Gouda; contemporary artists such as Karel van Mander, Karel Van Mander only make a brief mention of his origins in the city.
